New interim final rules were issued today by TSA and USDOT. The rules require background checks on HAZMAT truckdrivers. The rules take effect on Monday, May 5. No new CDL may be issued before the TSA completes a background check. Within 180 days the background checks will also be mandatory for anyone renewing their HAZMAT CDL. The background checks must be completed by the TSA. If you have certain types of convictions, you are NOT eligible for a HAZMAT CDL.

The interim final rules are available at http://dms.dot.gov/ by searching for docket numbers 11117 (FMCSA), 14982 (RSPA), and 14610 (TSA).

Interim final rules are rules that go into effect now, but may still be modified by the agency in the future, when they issue the "Final" rules.
