A few Weeks ago I announced that after 30 years I had Retired from Driving and Took a Operations Job with a Small Local Courier Service, Some asked me to Post on the new Job so here it is, I work in Oprations for a small service we have 7 Cargo Vans and 2 Small Pick ups with caps and 4 24Foot Straight Trucks, That service about 60 Customers a day, I know have New Respect for the Dispatchers, They have to work thier Butts off to Keep Everyone Happy, Drivers,Customers and Management, and thats hard to do, But they do a fair Job at keeping 13 Diffrent types of Trucks Loaded and Moving, My Job is not the 8am-4pm that I thought it was but I still welcome the challenge of staying on top of all it. So far I haven't had time to miss the road and I hope it stays that way, I do get out of the office everyday for Lunch or there wouldn't be a Lunch. So there you are thats Life as it is today. Take care Stay Safe and Stay Loaded,

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I think, for most of us, the dispatcher job is a real mystery. Please continue letting us know how it goes and what sort of things we can do to make everyone's job better as we all try to service customers.

Thank you Fastman_1 for your introspective post.

I only spent a few hours in the dispatch areas of two major carriers and that experience validates your comments. It is a very difficult job!

When a driver calls into dispatch, he or she is only dealing with one person directly. The dispatcher may have two customers on hold, another driver who just refused a load previously accepted and another dispatcher asking them a question at the same time; plus they are trying to answer your question too!

Again, thank you so very much for being a witness as to how frantic a day can be in the dispatch department.

PS. I just called a dispatcher a couple of days ago to say thank you for being patient with me during a very frustrating week. I told him that I appreciated his help and I wanted to apologize if I seemed terse at the onset of our phone conversation. He said that he understood the nature of my frustration and no apology was needed.

Thank you for posting that. Many folks come on here and trash dispatch. Sometimes a few of them deserve it. Mostly they don't. Virtually everyone in a truck has no clue because they've never spent time in there. They go by what they heard 8th hand and that's mostly bs. There isn't a barrel full of favoritism in dispatch like most believe, there's more like a measuring cup full. Yes, there's a little now and then but it's next to nothing in the grand scheme of things. As you've now seen, those folks are too busy for game playing. Thanks for the update and keep us posted.

I can't remember even one instance of feeling that the dispatcher was at fault for whatever was bothering me. It's like calling to report an error on one of your bills: no matter how outrageous (or just dumb) the error is, it's not fair to be angry at the person who takes the call. (Not smart, either)
Best of luck to you! :)

In our previous T/T life our company had assigned dispatchers. After watching our dispatcher for a few minutes one afternoon, I had, and continue to have a new understanding of hassles that they have. It's a job that I wouldn't want no matter how much they paid me! Good dispatchers are worth their weight in gold.

Our Dispatchers are Multi-Task Gods as I watch them we have 4 each has to phones going and Typing the Order in and then Sending it out to the Unit for Accpentence, then calling the Driver if he Dosen't respond in a timely fashion 99% of the load offers are Accpeted by the Driver, In the Courier Business its all about Quanity not Quality of the Load since the Loads rarely go Futher than Cross town, so the more then cam do the more $$$ they make.
