Canada New Canadian Vehicle Inspection Reports

Reference was made in another thread to new Canadian Vehicle Inspection Reports. So as to not take that thread off topic, I'm starting a new one here.

On a recent trip up there, Diane and I saw an article about new Canadian Vehicle Inspection Reports in a Canadian trucking magazine. We accidently tossed the magazine before we gave it a careful read.

Has anyone else heard of these? Our first scan of the article left us thinking this could be important. What impact if any do they have on U.S. expediters hauling freight into or out of Canada?

US operators will be able to continue to use thier current inspection reports if they meet the standards set out in US CFR49.

That said, I'm sure the fine folks at the Ontario scales will use this as a way to hassle US drivers if they think they are being mouthy etc.

The jist of the new rules is to separate critical defects (the kind you need fixed before you move) to the kind that, OK you saw it, you noted it but it's no reason to keep you from driving.

Ontario has some strange laws with pre-trip sheets. A carrier (Ontario based)must keep them for 6 months BUT...if the driver so much as makes a mark or note it is then considered a "maintenance record" that must be backed up by a work order (saying it was fixed) and kept for 2 years. This created a lot of problems. I had a driver that would write down on his pre trip things like "ashtray stuck shut". OK thanks, we'll fix it when we can. Problem is when I got audited, I had a "noted defect" that I could not supply a repair order for and I did not keep the pre trip sheet on file for 2 years.

I always hated audits......

You can find examples of the VIR's at jjkeller.com . Put Canadian Vehicle Inspection Report in their search . One of our drivers told us Ontario inspectors told him he'd have to put more info on our forms (license plate number , location of inspection , etc plus their list of items to be checked is more extensive ) . I bought the Canadian forms and keep them visible on my dashboard . An indication of willingness to comply can make an inspection easier or even get you waved by .
