Canada New border crossing

An international group is suggesting another one between Detroit(Kwame again? You've got to be kidding me!) and Windsor. I kind of like the idea of one downriver around Monroe. Take some of the pressure off the cities. The problem would be what it would take to hook it to the 401, but I would think the city of Windsor would be happy tp throw some money at something like that. Opinions?

Actually the ignorance of the people of Detroit (and their leadership) will prevent any crossing to be built as it has prevented business from locating in Detroit. Canada has the can do attitude and I can't see any problems with Canada.

There is a lot of land north (sort of) the rencen that is empty and this “dream†of a river front casino, parks were you and your family can picnic and then can get shot and a copy of Milwaukee and Cleveland river front should be all scrapped in order to bring economic life back to the city.

The best idea that has been floated (no pun intended) has not gotten any press, a ferry like they use in other parts of the great lakes. There are really few times during the year where a ferry moving across a half mile of river is not possible.

The dock can be built quickly and on the US side there is plenty of land that connects to freeways (I75) that can be used and even room for a nice large customs/truck only stop.

But again there is this big idea Detroit leadership can do anything.

The CITY OF WINDSOR won't put in a dime. Highways are a Provincial Responsibility and Ontario would have to build the link up. The Feds will throw some money in the pot too.

As far as Canada having a "CAN DO" attitude; I guess the perspective is different. As long as the local politicians get involved; nothing will be accomplished. I don't know our two countries managed to build Interstate Highways; Pipelines; The St Lawrence Seaway; The 401 or anything else.

HI
I think they should close the Tilbury service center to cars and turn it into a customs staging area. They could build a new service center for cars where the Windsor scale house is.Why are the scaling truck 15 miles from the bridge and in a spot that is so easy to get around anyway.
They could set up monitors that would show the PAPS # that are in the system. This would save the drivers from having to call the broker to check on their PAPS.Thus freeing up the brokers to do their job instead of answering the phone all the time.
This would also give the driver time to refax any missing paperwork.Keep the Tim Hortons and the rest rooms so that the drivers would be comforable while they wait. The could have a gate like they do at Windsor customs {you have to key in a number to leave} so they could regulate the number of trucks going thru the city. This way if the bridge gets backed up they can just hold the trucks there. Its better for the driver because he is sitting in a place that has rest rooms and food instead of sitting in his truck in a 3 mile backup moving 90 feet every 3 minutes. This would eliminate a lot of pollution in the city of Windsor and make it easier for people to get in and out of the businesses on Huron Church.
Thanks and have a good one.

Bryan: This is THE!!!! most logical suggestion I've ever seen.
Since it is so logical and simple; not to mention low cost it could never be adopted. The bureaucrats can't do things that are simple and easy.

I would normally NEVER think about disagreeing with Bryan. Having said that...

When you see the amount of truck traffic backed up when it's busy, I think you would very quickly end up with a jamed up service center. The Monroe crossing would take half the trafffic around the city. The staging idea would make it more orderly. But if I lived in Windsor I think I would prefer to see the volume reduced.

Let me chime in here...I'm not sure how the City of Windsor would get to excited about diverting all that traffic from their malls, shopping centers, businesses etc. I would think a plan like that would hurt that city.

The trucks are only going through Windsor because they have to get to the bridge. The vast majority are'nt stopping for much more than a cup of Timmies, and most of them are getting that in Tilbury. I think business would gladly trade a few ocasional customers so their regulars could get in and out easier.

Hi
Yes they need another bridge but it will take years to get it built.
They decided to twin the Peace Bridge 2 years ago and it's still a single span bridge.Other than changing the toll booths I haven't seen much progress. They have even talked about running an interstate from Peace Bridge to Columbia SC and I haven't seen any progress there either.Sure would make them Toronto to Norfolk loads alot easier.
Another problem that I can see with building a new bridge is the prearrival notification rules. If I fax my paperwork to a broker at the Ambassador Bridge and then find out its backed up I can't cross at the new bridge in Monroe.Unless they put up an info sign back before London telling me the bridge is backed up.Which would give me enough time to make the needed phone calls and fax the paperwork to a broker in Monroe.Any place past London is too far, as the next truckstop with a fax machine is in Chatham which would require me to sit at the truckstop for at least a hour in order to give broker a chance to process paperwork.
We will have to put it to a vote the next time we are both in Billy's. Loser buys!
