I get continuous pop-ups by www.amaena.com announcing a blackworm virus and offers a solution. I can't bring myself to accept their offer to stop the so-called blackworm virus as my mcafee scans ok.

anyone else having this problem and/or have a solution to these pop-ups? I'm a novice user so be gentle with me.

It is not politicaly correct to refer to a worm by a obvious racial slur. I am suprised that a man of your advanced years would use such a term. Jessie and Al will be demanding that EO stop allowing this type of baiting to continue and will have their followers at the MATTS show in a merger of solidarity to object to these type of posts.

Geraldo will be interviewing key members of EO to see if they agree with this type of racial biais. First interview will be scheduled with Gregg, for an opposing point of view the second interviw will be with TallCal. EO will have to present evidence to the Rainbow Coalition and the ACLU that no discrimation exists against worms based on their color or religious affilation.

Former President Clinton and Presidential candiate Hillary Clinton will give speeches stating that all worms are to be considered equal and there should be no exceptions. Former VP Al Gore stated that all worms came from the same forest so there is an ecological pattern to worms and we should not destroy them.

Just a thought and comment –

There is a new marketing ploy out there that has these “warning†boxes pop up when you go to some websites, they are not scanning your computer or anything like that, and they are just pop up ads. I had them pop up on machines that I just loaded the operating system on and no viruses, worms or adware were present.

Kathy is right, but I add this – make sure you have a really good virus prevention software and keep it up to date, also don’t go to ahh…. porn, off the wall gambling or some of these joke sites or even get curious about them and if a strange email pops up in your inbox like mortgage offers – DELETE IT – DON’T READ IT. These are some of the sources of adware, viruses and such.

My biggest email pet peeve is the forwarded email with the never ending trail from which it came from. I usually just delete them.

The other thing I must warn you about is a scam where they spoof email addresses and make it look like it was sent from your bank, paypal and eBay. I get an average of three a month asking me to log on to the banks website or call a number (of course it is an 800 number and off shore) to ‘confirm’ my personal info or with links to their website so to infect my computer. The funny thing is I get them from banks I never had an account, it is called phishing. As I am writing this I just got one from PayPal telling me that they are suspending my account because I logged in from a different location – funny my home IP address changes every month so ….. well it goes to a Japanese website undoubtedly run by the Japanese or Russian mafia. I usually get five a month from eBay telling me they are locking my account because my info is not up to date – it is.

My suggestion here is simple, if you get one from the bank, go to the bank in person and talk to them. If you get one from eBay or Paypal, go to their site via paypal.com or ebay.com but NEVER click on the link in the email – the second you do you will infect your computer. If you are an outlook express user, turn off the preview pane because some versions of outlook open the email up to preview it. if you are an outlook user, do the same and upgrade to outlook 2003, much better at blocking viruses, adware and such.

Remember DELETE IT - DON'T READ IT.

Kathy and Greg:

It's back.

I use Webroot Spy sweeper and Spam Shredder and McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan and now, Ad-Aware. I also get the phishing attempts in the guise of Bank America, Wells Fargo, Paypall, E-Bay, et al; I've never been tempted to open any of them. I also never have opened an e-mail attachment or link from any sender I did not know. I can't vouch for all of the sites I've visited, but I get all the porn I need just by looking in the mirror, so that's not my vice. I've also never visited my account from hotel workstations, laptops or other foreign locations.

I'm sure I've done something to invite the Amaena pop-ups into my pc, but I'm at a loss. Keeping in mind that I'm a novice among the rookie users, do you have another cure to try?

I would recommend cleaning out your cookies and your temp internet files. That should help too. Also when you do the Adaware program make sure you clean "FULL SYSTEM SCAN" most people do the quicky and it does a good job, but you need a full cavity search now and then :+

If you have Internet Explorer you can delete your cookes by going to the TOOLS drop down menu then Internet Options from there you will see delete cookies and Delete files.

Just to let you know if you delete your cookies anything that you have to automatically log you in on some sites will be deleted so you will have to remember pass words and such for these sites (i rely alot on this save feature so i hate deleting cookies :) )

After doing the clean up of the temp files and cookies run adaware again.

Terry,
If you are still having the problem it is probably in the form of a trojan horse virus. Make sure your antivirus software is up to date. Also be sure Microsoft Windows is up to date. Microsoft has put out a lot of fixes lately to get rid of the kind of problems your having. If you don't know how to do a Windows update just email me and I will give you step by step instructions.

Another thing, you are running all those various virus and spyware programs, that is enough to slow your computer down to a crawl. Decide on one of each type of programs and get rid of the others.

Here's a very good and low priced antivirus link (F-Prot). I use this on one of the websites I manage that gets over a million hits a month. In the past 5 years it has never let a virus get to the server.

I think you mentioned using McAfee. No offense intended but McAfee is a very poor anti-virus software. They don't keep up with the viruses that are going around. It also slows your PC down a lot.
Another good one and the one I use on all the PCs at the house is AVG and it is free for personal use. You have to really search their site to find the free edition but it is there. http://www.grisoft.com
