Well, here they go... N. Korea fired some 200 artillary shells, S. Korea responded, and launched fighters... by tomorrow, they'll be asking for us to send troops.

I say pull our troops out and let the UN fill the gap.

We never declared war on North Korea, and never directly negotiated a cease fire with them as the United States. This was a military action by the UN not the United States which should have not taken place to begin with and seems that if it is a real war, congress should have declared it as such.

seems this time the south provoked this one by challenging the north in disputed waters...

The skirmish began when Pyongyang warned the South to halt military drills in the area, according to South Korean officials. When Seoul refused and began firing artillery into disputed waters, albeit away from the North Korean shore, the North retaliated by bombarding the small island of Yeonpyeong, which houses South Korean military installations and a small civilian population.

So we should abandon people who want to be free and those same people we have promised to help remain free?

The UN ain't goin to do squat and neither is barry..both will send a "Firmly Worded Letter"...then when that doesn't do a thing, they both will send a "REALLY Firmly Worded Letter",,,in all Caps!!

Then lets put an end to the billions spent and pull our troops out.

We need to reconsider our position with the UN and how we do their fighting. It may be a good thing for those in the UN but if we need to cut back on budget needs, then considering we never declared war, it should be on the table as a money saver for the tax payer.

Ain't gonin to happen!! If anything we are going to strengthen our position within the UN..barry wants to be apart of the world governence we are about to sign the small arms treaty with the UN at barrys and hillarys insistance and barry will use excutive order to by pass congress signing it...he also want to add to the UN Global world climate change BS as a form of "wealth re- distribution" and that is want the UN has come out and said that it is...

Nope we aren't "re-thinking our position within the UN in a way to lessen our position, we will be ADDING to it building it up...

Why not?..We've done it before....left S Vietnam and left people to be killed and tortured.....

Yes we did it before does not make it right and I think we were wrong to abandon S Vietnam and so I dont think we should abandon S Korea

Different congress. Funding for operations comes from Congress not the president. He can pitch a b*tch about it but if congress says NO, it is no.

About Vietnam, they were overrun by the north and we pulled out because there wasn't much of a choice. We almost won the war a few times but remember that Korea is a police action by a pseudo entity that isn't a real country and Vietnam was a military action by a few countries - there is a BIG difference.

If it is a need to protect SK, then it should be done with the parties who have more to lose than we do. Japan and most of the pacific rim countries have a great stake in containing the little man, more than we ever do and it is they who should be pitching in with material, men and working to end the madness.

What will we have really lost if NK invades the south?

Cheap Stuff?

Ok just say it in simple words you think we shoul abandon people who want to be free and who we promised to and have been helping to be free so America s word/promise means nothing

Yes South Vietnam was overrun after we signed agreement with the North and said we were leaving Vietnam and they watched the news reports from our country about lack of support for the war and knew all they had to do was outlast us long enough to win

THIS is a UN operation, not a US operation and it is important that we understand that the UN is running the show, not the US.

The issue of freedom isn't even on the table because of the push by many in SK to have some sort of reunification.

See here is the thing, we can't continue to complain about spending money we don't have, having our economy in shambles and be the cop on the beat in Asia. We need to reevaluate our position both economically and militarily in these times. If we continue to throw money and resources into something when no one else does for the purpose of keeping someone else 'free' then we will end up bankrupting ourselves and opening ourselves up to more problems not to mention the issue that they will end up being subjugated because we are weak.

Realistically Japan has more to lose than we do, and so does a lot of others. Is it that we need to be the exclusive country standing watch over the fence or should it be a multilateral effort to keep this all in check?

The real multilateral effort is needed.

I feel that we should pull back some and demand others to take our place to fill the gap who are part of the UN. The same goes for the large contingency in Germany which we need to bring home, our participating in NATO is not needed because the Soviets are gone and in the Balkans, where the UN has screwed up, we should not be there at all, let Germany and France take over.

So how do we work the timing pull back now and hope the others will step up before the North goes south and takes over and kills and takes away their freedom??? As for those that seem to want reunion with the North they may have a misguided notion that the North will let them keep the way of life the south enjoys now. As for Europe I would be for reducing to some extent but i would not say that Russia will never be a threat again

You're looking at it backwards. When you send American boys to fight, die, get maimed, PTSD, etc, it had better be for the defense of this country. If you want to free some other country, take volunteers for THAT CONFLICT ONLY.

"Ok, everybody, who wants to fund the fight for the freedom of Outer Turdistan? We're passing the hat, so pony up. Ok, now who wants to go fight and risk their life or health for Outer Turdistan?" iow, if the Koreas are so important to you, YOU and other volunteers who feel the same can go fight. How many parents want their children to die for somebody ELSE'S freedom or lack thereof?

Oh, and when the wounded come back, the ones who are maimed for life, either physically or mentally, come back and have to be both cared for and supported for the rest of their lives, YOU DO IT.

So with your thinking we should not have gotten into ww1 and ww2 and we might have been the only free country left in the world which I doubt would have lasted long
