Michelle’s Separate Travel Costs Taxpayers Thousands

Michelle Obama Thursday traveled separately from President Obama to Martha’s Vineyard, costing taxpayers thousands in additional expenses to get her a few hours of extra vacation time.

Mrs. Obama and her daughters arrived just before 2 pm Thursday on a U.S. government jet, according to the Martha’s Vineyard Times, which got its information from the local airport. The first lady’s office has been silent on her travel. President Obama arrived in the evening along with the family dog Bo.

The extra costs related to Mrs. Obama’s solo trip mainly include the flight on a specially designed military aircraft she took instead of Air Force One, as well as any extra staff and Secret Service that had to be enlisted to go with her. She would also have had her own motorcade from the airport to her vacation residence.

Mrs. Obama’s separate jet travel sends the wrong message on a host of issues, from global warming to the budget deficit to the economy – in which currently so many people can’t afford to take a vacation at all.

This is not the first time Michelle has gone on vacation ahead of the president on the taxpayers’ tab. Last December, she racked up what was likely more than $100,000 in expenses leaving early for their Hawaii vacation.

Your anger should lie with the Secret Service, Diva. It's their call that the president and first lady travel separately. In a motorcade, for example, the "Mrs. limo" is usually three vehicles away from the president's. Been going that way for decades.

I don't think you're correct on this one. There's no security reason why they should travel separately, if there were, it would have been made public a long time ago as this isn't the first time they've traveled separately to the same location.

P.S. It's not anger.....it's disgust.

I can't even remember how many times barry and joe have said, "jobs are our #1 priority"....and how many "jobs plans" has he put in place and how many time as his "jobs plans" worked???

Yea most understad that barry can't provide jobs for the masses of citizens unemployed...but he is the one pounding away at it and the unemployment rate continues to go up...oh and barrys banker buddies at BOA, you remember one of the banks they bailed out...they are cutting 3500 more jobs and that is over and above the 2500 layiffs they have already had this yr...

Anybody know who this is in pic with Obama playing golf.That would be billionaire Michael Bloomberg who in 2007 had a net worth of 11.5 billion dollars.Today he has a net worth of 18 billion.While Americans lost jobs by the millions Obama's golfing buddys made billions.

as far as BOFA goes that is another love affair the liberal base is willing to over look when it comes to Obama.Any one care to take a guess how much money BOFA paid in federal taxes for 2009???????????

To me, a presidential vacation is a non-issue. However, Michelle (aka Ru Paul) goes on way too many luxury vacations, ala Oprah. She takes this as a personal cash cow extravaganza. I agree that they should cut their own costs whenever they can.

Well that is the big issue people have with Obama, he says he is concerned about people but instead of doing something productive with that money he spent taxpayer's money for his wife to go on vacation.

Well, as a bomb dog handler in the European theater in the 80's, I was assigned to a VIP support team for any travels in Europe (except the UK) for the Secret Service and State Department. While I'm sure that I still have the credentials showing my certifications, I'm not real certain I kept copies of the orders that placed me in the motorcades that I spoke about previously.

Maybe your experience differs from mine. How about you sharing yours?

And while we're at it, to clarify any confusion, who, exactly is "us"? Are you speaking for all of the participants on the site, or is someone sharing your username, or are multiple personalities involved? Please help me understand.

"Us" would be the members reading and posting in this thread.

I started a thread with a quote from a news story. You're the one that made the claim that I was upset with the wrong person, that I should be upset with the Secret Service, I asked you to back up your claims meaning with links to information that would prove that the SS does indeed decide who rides on Air Force One with the president. I thank you for your service but this in no way proves the point you're trying to make. I would have to think that especially in the "European theater", or anywhere else overseas, the first lady would be riding in the same plane as the president. It's not like they're trying to protect the "next in line".

That's the point I was trying to make, if the secret service were the ones making that call, with Obama having the media in his hip pocket, they would have made that public long ago....anything for their "messiah".
