Saturday (2/6/10) mid-morning we pulled into the Vicksburg, MS rest area on I-20. This was to be a ten minute (or less) stop to use the rest room, update my log book, and continue on our way. No sooner than I had parked the truck in a legal truck parking space and stepped to the rear to use our restroom, the security guard was standing outside our passenger door scowlling at my wife.

At first he did not indicate that he wished to speak to her, so she simply made eye contact with him and continued to do so. Then after a couple of minutes of this, he finally stepped closer to our truck and motioned for her to step out of the truck. She instead rolled her window down and asked what he needed. He immediately launched off into a tirade about "do you see the sign in front of you telling trucks there is only 30 minutes parking for trucks allowed?" and that "you better not be staying more that that". She acknowledge that we were in fact aware of the sign and that we did not plan to be but a few minutes. Again he launched into another tirade about our trailer tires being over the line into the next parking space and that we were improperly parked. Being that I'm almost 80' long (much longer than their spaces) and that there was only one other truck besides us in the whole truck parking area, I didn't see the harm in allowing my trailer to be about two feet into the other space temporaily to help shorten us up front and rear so other vehicles could get passed us. Appearently he disagreed. Guess I was supposed to block up the traffic flow in "his" rest area while I pee'd! LOL

The guard again approached our truck after seeing that I had stepped out to do a quick chain check, as if he wanted to continue to scold us about something else. We had done nothing to this person to deserve his attitude, so I simply gave him a hand gesture and drove off! LOL

For those of you not familiar with this rest area, it has limited truck parking (only about seven spaces) and has twenty-four hour security on-site. Trucks are limited to no more than thirty minutes of parking and then will be asked to leave by security. I can understand the reasoning for that and have no problem with it, when your thirty minutes has expired. What I have a problem with is an over zealous and rude rest area security guard. A complaint was filed today with his superior!

It would be helpful to know if any other drivers have had simular issues with this security guard. He is black and middle aged.

We had a similar incident at the Mississippi I-10 rest area Exit 2 only with a middle-aged white guy sporting a Beretta 92 sidearm.

We had only been on-site a few minutes and had not left the truck when he approached the drivers window and started in on the rules of the rest area. We had not broken any at that point but I was getting close.

At the time, we were running hurricane relief runs for Mississippi.

It was our thought that this was a fine "thank you" from MS for running where the traffic was bad, there was no fuel to be had, no food to be bought but a great need by the state for emergency goods and services.

We took our $$$ for that run and passed on further relief for MS and took instead the Louisiana and Texas runs. In contrast, we had the LA and TX police so happy to see us they offered to buy us lunch (which we gratefully declined) and made sure we were able to reach our deliveries.

I thought about filing a complaint with the Mississippi Governors Office but time gets away from me fast and I never did. But, I will always remember the fine folks at the Mississippi welcome center.

These are some sad things that happened to you guys. Sorry to hear about the way you was treated. I'm glad it wasn't me because I would have went off on both of these rent-a-cops. I would have called the state police and told them that you just pulled into a rest area and some guy is yelling outsize my truck and you don't know if its someone that is crazy trying to be a cop.

I had a similar incident last summer, so I'm thinking they are training them to act that way.

I did park across lines. There were only car slots to the right, so I pulled in parallel to the curb at the farthest end. I don't like to blindly back into traffic if I can help it. It was only a quick stop to respond to the qc and check my atlas. The guy seemed to think he was scolding me, and he did a reasonably amateur job at that. At first I tried to be polite, but after he continued to carry on all I could give him was an okay....okay....okay.... And he wouldn't quit. Just as I would start to roll up my window, he would spout off--and don't ever do it again. So I would turn back and say--okay--and peer back at him... At that point I didn't care because he was standing in the heat, and I had my ac running. If these guys are this reliably dweebish I'm sure they have to be setting themselves up for prime time youtube fame.

I agree. Make sure he isn't without ID, like a company name and if he refuses call the cops and tell them someone is impersonating an LEO.
