Michigan, what a state!

Our state is really screwed up. Once upon a time we had a 4% sales tax, the lowest in the country but because of a propaganda campaign, the stupid people of the state voted a sales tax hike by saying that places like Illinois had a higher tax, we should. We never paid taxes on services and should never pay taxes on services.

Well with the new taxes we have to pay taxes on services and here is the list of things we now will pay more for -
• Administrative services (such as payroll)
• Investment advising
• Janitorial
• Armored cars
• Private investigators
• Packaging and labeling
• Business service centers
• Commercial landscaping
• Courier services
• Document preparation
• Self-storage
• Transit
• Ground passenger services
• Travel agents
• Scenic transportation
• Service contracts
• Interior design
• Warehousing
• Storage
• Carpet and upholstery cleaning

Because we take pride in our sports, we will pay more for Skiing

And here is the more bizarre list of services -
• Tanning salons
• Escort services
• Massages
• Baby shoe bronzing
• Balloon-o-gram services
• Palm reading
• Pay phones – we already pay a tax on this and how many do we have that work?
• Singing telegrams
• Psychics
• Phrenology services
• Palm reading
• Personal trainers
• House sitting
• Shoeshine services

Oh boy we will be capturing all that money that will be generated from all those singing telegrams that happens in this state.

Services That Will Not Be Taxed -
• Vehicle repair
• Golf greens fees
• Marina fees
• Movies
• Legal fees
• Accounting fees
• Haircuts
Cable or satellite television – we already get taxed on this.
Sports and concert tickets – this should be taxed more to pay for the the upkeep of the stadiums.

That is screwed up...

Michigan being a water state you'd think marina fees would be taxed.

With some of the roads being so bad you'd think auto repairs would also be taxed...these 2 alone would generate alot of income for the state.

They've taxed alot of stuff that creates small business..taxing those services does more harm that good...

OVM,
You are so right.

It amazes me that the road repairs are on the "most screwed up" list. My sister lives on a major two lane road. They widen the road a few years ago and now are ripping up part of it because of the pot holes that appeared are so bad that if you hit them the right way with your truck, you will rip the tire up. My father was out there talking to the contractors as they worked in front of my sisters house last week and they told him that they put the road in and followed the instructions of the inspector to the letter. My father found out that they don't do any quality control checks on the material that they use and haven't since granholm got into office. I know the state of NY sends someone out here just to check the reclaimed concrete that they use for filler under the road base but Michigan - nothing.

You do know that the reason they have reset all the lights and raised the speed limits was not because the people wanted it but to use more fuel so to collect more taxes, could it be true?

That would be the most childish and most immoral action they could take if true.

Well it could be true. I was told that she actually did say something like this but if you think this is childish, look at the laptop for schools program.

I used to be able to driver across 8 mile road without stopping, Woodward and Telegraph all the same but now forget about it.

I can point to a number of roads where you used to be able to go a mile without hitting a light but now they are timed in such a way you stop at every light. AND these are not computer lights, they are set manually.

Think about it for a while, higher speeds - more fuel used. And with the lack of enforcement of the speed limits in some areas, like north of Pontiac, up 23 or through Ann Arbor where the speeds approach the speed of sound there is a lot of fuel used hence more taxes collected at the pump.
