Hello,
I'am curious on others experience with michigan loads.
I have had trouble in this area recently and have talked to other drivers who say that, when the load is delivered that they go out of service and drive out of mi to a better board.I can't imagine how they make any money doing this and just wondering how your recent experiance in mi have been?I know that it is slower than last year at this time.
thanks for your info

I've only been in the business a decade and a half, and never did relish going to the Detroit area. Historically been cheap, short freight outa there. Maybe some (a few) homeruns but (##### few), and not going anywhere you wana be.

I have no desire to go there since Conway folded and honestly since that happened we have only run one load crossing at Windsor..
I am sad about the demise of Detroit but I am not miseries company...
Made up my mind along time ago to cross that area off my list and have stuck to my guns....
The Irony is that I don't hate the state but it is really a pain to go there and even though I love a bargain I will not buy a 8k house on 8 mile to call myself an investor.

Obviously it does cost money to deadhead out of michigan or anywhere for that matter. I ALWAYS deadhead out of Detroit. I usually go down along the Ohio turnpike and it isn't very long until I get a decent load. If I were to wait in Detroit I would wait many hours or even days and then I might get one that isn't very good. Yes it costs money to do what I do but how much are you making waiting around for something to happen? My opinion is that sometimes half a loaf is better than none.

I live in Mich, the economy here sucks. I get out from home easy but most are loads from Ohio. Might move soon, no chance of things getting better for several years. What a shame. The state has SOOOO much to offer but high taxes, bad politics will kill anything.

I agree layout, Michigan is a great place to live. There is alot to offer and a lot to do compared to most states. We have sporting events, we always get most concerts tours, we have the great lakes to go boating, swimming, fishing, ect.

But politics has really killed the state and corp. greed didnt help either (do these big execs need millions of bonus's to run a company) I love MI, would love to stay there for the rest of my life, but the gvmnt, taxes and the demise of the big 3 really make it hard.

For freight goes, knock on wood, i havent had many problems getting out of there, i just have a hard time finding freight to go home.

Neon... what? No mention of the unions destroying Detroit. Nice sharp upturn while Engler and Archer were running things, regardless of Engler's cronyism. Personally can't stand Grandholm (aka Cocoapuff), as her answer to everything is to raise taxes. Hell... why not just print your own money, Gov! Thank God for term limits. Once she's done, maybe she can get a job cleaning the kennels at the humane society. It fits her to a T!!!

Ever notice that if you live or stop anywhere in Michigan you can talk to 1000 people and nobody voted for Granholm. If no one in Michigan voted for her how did she get in. And the country thought Floridas hanging chads were a problem. I think maybe all the dead people in the state must have voted for her. I here you about moving out of the state but the problem is who will buy your home. I live in Michigan and I just hope that at some time in the near future I will be able to sell and relocate. 5 or 6 years ago this would never have been an option. I loved it here. may be a bit humid at times but out west you have rattle snakes and scorpions, down south snakes and large spiders. Michigan may not have been paridise but over all a nice place to live. Now am hoping I can get out without loosing my shirt and go somewhere that I can afford to live not live to pay for a small home that cost like a large one elsewhere. But I must say we have some of the nicest school and govt buildings anywhere.

This subject has been a recurrent theme. It seems the vans are always crying about Detroit. The point is that you guys are always there like board-up workers to take the small load of widgets, or fasteners, in there. If you had a decent run to take them in, just get out after a break and go where there aren't 50 vans.

Deadhead is part of smart planning in expediting, for D units as well. Stories of sitting for days are a joke to me. If I sit one day, I'm out in the evening. The next day usually something better is there.
I have been a MI. resident for 27 plus years. We had the lights ready to go out in the early 80's, and now it looks just as bad for all the reasons we in expediting know about. The main problem, despite whichever party is in there, is that the big 3 and their overpaid bosses have looted the economy for decades.
All the major auto production has gone to Canada, since they have a national health care plan, which takes the heat off the companies in MI. If you vans want to run the stuff you were developed for, run into ON. and DH out: you just shoot yourself in the foot.

i live in michigan also..ive noticed that yes its not as great as it used to be...usually am 10th out of grand rapids area...takes two to three days to get that 100 mile load anymore...it pays to dh to chicago area...loads r down for me.wayyyy down. miles are horrendous....i have had weeks where it doesnt pay for the qc and insurance...now about the governor..even though i am poor i would gladly shell out the $5.00 to buy a rat for her so it could GNAW that huge mole off her face....

We Live In Mich. also Grand Rapids area while industry keeps leaving and the economy is awful I personally want to live no where else. Beautiful lakes great fishing and alot to do winter and summer. House is paid for I just worry for our children. Engler is the 1 who left our state in the biggest deficits in the states history. Now I'm not a big fan of Gramholm, Devos would have made thing much worse. My opinion... and I have many reasons. As for freight we always get out of Mich. when we are home. We do have a problem getting back to Mich. to go home though.

I don't see anybody here crying about poor them!!!!I only see people stating simple facts on their buisness and operations!!!.I to agree on factoring in dead head on a load and also will not sit more than a day(excluding weekends). This post has shown me that I'am not the only one having a hard time in detroit lately. Why attack b units?I was unaware of a previous post on the subject!!!

I also live in MI. My truck owner parks his trucks in Lapeer, and fortunately enough, there is a board there for Panther. I have never sat longer than 12 hours on the Lapeer board, waiting to get out as a team. Granted, it may not take you far (OH,IL,IN), but at least it moves you to a better freight lane.

Sorry for all you Michigan fans, the state is dead thanks to the present administration and state house.

I read the posts and I have to say that many of you know what it is like in other states and don’t see the real issues here.

If we are to see a resuscitation of the state, it starts with stopping the blame game and getting rid of Granholm or at least making Granholm do her job. I would actually like to see Michigan get going again but it will never happen with the talk of tax increases, the idea that she is the second coming and the thought that no one could have done a better job – in reality DeVos would have been at least no worst than her. Her administration is corrupt, just like the McNamara administration which she oversaw for the “king makerâ€, with her push to give the “First Gentleman†a staff and transportation for his per projects, hiring junior Levin and other democrats after they lost their election bids, and the MEA with the contributions stuff. No where do I see the gains in jobs or the fact that we actually have any real companies wanting to move here.

One of the biggest problems we have is taxes; the Small Business Tax is one thing that discourages people from starting or moving here. We need to eliminate this now but there is talk about increasing the taxes to cover a deficient that she created by increasing services to the poor (which never made it to them but to increase staffing for the various departments), increasing money to the schools (which also never made it to the students but to increase the administration of the schools), moving forward a lot of road repairs and even with the expenditure for stupid bowl that we have yet to realize any return (the fact that after the game, investments in Pittsburg increased may say something).

Oh yea lets not forget her 300 jobs by Google, which offset the Pfizer cut of 10,000 jobs in 2003 or that we have had three other ‘high tech’ companies move into the state and employ 1100 people who happen to come form India under H-1b visas. Oh boy, really great growth! Many of the companies, who have settled here, have not hired from the local communities but have brought their own workers to the state or hired out of the colleges for summer work. This really is not growth, as is considered by the people in Lansing because once they are done, they leave. I know of a couple companies down the road from D-C when the tax credits expired, they left. They have not been the only ones either.

Another problem is property taxes, which has been so convoluted thanks to the idiots who voted for the sales tax increase back in the 90’s – my vacant property went from $295 to $925 in taxes alone without a substantial increase in value. I think that a serious look at the efforts of Florida to eliminate property taxes should be on the agenda here. I mean if we have an elimination of property taxes, we will no doubt attract businesses to move here. Actually thinking about it, maybe shifting more taxes around to eliminate some of the more hidden taxes in the state will also help.

But what ever it is to help the state, it starts with eliminating the person who put us in the position in the first place, Granholm.
