Michelin Super Singles

On June 4th we added super singles to the truck. We put on Michelin X1 XDAHT+ 445 50 R22.5 drive lug tread. They come with aluminum wheels and we believe we lost about 250 pounds. We would like to run about 10,000 miles before we can post what has happened with our fuel mileage. The truck will also be at the Expo and will have a fuel mileage average by then. Our first load was a heavy load and the truck does seem to handle and ride better.

We have also have cables instead of chains for these tires. That would also mean we have two extra sets of chains for 22.5 tires.

This is good information. It will be very interesting to see what benefit super singls bring to your straight truck.

We were talking about this in another thread a short time ago.
Now that someone has actually done it you all be able to get some real feedback! Very important.:)

We had looked at these last year, but had concerns if one was damaged, very difficult to find road repair assistance and tire availability. So we ditched to effort. Keep in mind, that was a year ago. Not sure what has changed.
Additionally, for some of the same reasons, I would only consider these on a tandem or a lift axle truck like Teamcaffee's.
Might not hurt to call a few road side repair trucks and see availability. It might be a whole new dimension like on a weekend.
At that time, they could be found but we would have to have them overnighted. Not convenient in the middle of a load. I as well would be interested in the fuel milage gain. Would have to weigh that up against the risk.

We will also be adding the Doran tire pressure monitoring system when we get home. This should also help to know if we have one going low. The drivers we talked to that monitored their tires with consistency have not had any problems. I would also not recommend these if you do not have a lift axle.

We have also considered putting these on the lift axle and then we can rotate them back to the drives when needed and this way we would also have a spare.

That was exactly my thoughts. I think it would be a must and give you alittle insurance.

I have a few questions;

1 - How much did they cost per tire/wheel?

2 - Why didn't you have the tire monitor installed when you got them? Sorry, I found out that the system you mention is a valve stem monitor system, not a 'in the tire/straped to the rim' install.

3 - What tire pressure do you run them at?

4 - Are you running Nitrogen with the tires or plan on using Nitrogen?

Thanks in advance.

Gregg You get a discount from Michelin on the tires through FedEx on the National Account. Jury still out on the final price. We will not be running Nitrogen and right now we are running 110 lbs.

This weekend I was goin south on I-65 and looked over in the north bond lane and saw a poor young service guy struggling with one of the wide ones. The alum. rim was bigger than he was, but he was doing his job.
That's why we drive instead of change tires. Right?

LOL OK we have been busy!

So far we love how the ride has improved. We are just now starting to see our fuel mileage climb. When we first put the singles on the mileage dropped almost a full mile per gallon. We have put about 12,000 miles on the tires and we have now gained back the mile per gallon and still climbing. We have had a struggle as we have been in some really hot states and have used the generator a lot which hurts our fuel mileage some.

We also added the DORAN air monitoring system on the tires. This has also given us more peace of mind on monitoring the constant air pressure on the tires.

The July issue of Landline magazine has an article where, on page 59, it discusses Canadian weight limits on wide base tires. The article states that, while they are permitted in all territories and provinces, they're limited in most provinces to 13,200 pounds per axle - significantly less than the USA permitted 17,000 pounds per axle. Something to think about when taking a ful USA allowable weight into Canada.

Changes are soon expected in the Canadian law to bring the weight limits on wide base tires to equal that of the USA regulations.

I'll be interested in reading about your winter experience with them when the season rolls around.

No doubt there are benefits with super singles, but I have serious concerns about their running capabilities during the winter season. Those concerns at this point are mainly based on the theory that a wider tire is not good in the snow; however, theory and reality do not always match up.

We talked to several drivers about winter driving conditions before we purchased the tires and where satisfied with their answers that the traction is good with these tires. We are also anticipating the winter though and how they will react. We have been in some pretty sever rain with no noticeable difference in how the truck handles.

We checked the axle weights and without the tag axle up we are legal for British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. With the axle down we are legal for the rest of the provinces.

We have finally wore the new off the tires and our fuel mileage is starting to climb we are now consistently running in the upper nines and we hope to move into the ten's before the end of summer.

OVM you are right! Before the tires we stayed consistently in the mid range to upper nines using Power Service. We decided to quit using the Power Service while testing the tires so the results are just from the change of the tires.

We will go back to using the Power Service soon to see how that helps us.
