Does a 2006 Mercedes MBE 4000 have glow plugs?
I had to do a cold start this morning and I was beginning to think it wasn't going to start. Should have plugged in the block heater.

If they are anything like the plugs in the Mercedes sprinter engine you want to think twice about changing them yourself. Bust one and your looking at a lot of downtime with a huge labor bill.

I have no idea if they are but I would ask questions of someone familiar with the task.

More than likely an intake air heater, like a heated grid, Jim.

It was 19 degrees this morning. Our pick up has glow plugs and an idiot light to tell you they are working. The Mercedes didn't have an idiot light and I have never had to do a cold start before. I guess I should have left the key turned on for a minute before attempting to start it.

I have the baby MBE and it doesn't have them. If you don't have the light telling you to wait to start you most likely don't have them.

I also have the Lil MB motor in my truck with the intake heater.
I find it hard to believe that 19 degrees is cold enough to stop a modern diesel eng from rolling over and firing..Just doesnt seem cold enough from my experience of playing with trucks..But then again there is alot I dont know about the newer equipt out here.
I wonder if its not due to loss of prime, (not knowing how long it sat) to much corn oil in your pilot fuel ,,slow cranking speed???I'm just thinking it may and or could be something else causing it to start hard while cold..

I start the truck every three days when at home and run it for about 15-30 minutes. I keep a battery charger on it to keep the batteries up.
It turned over easily but did not fire up. After the third try it fired up like it normally does. Like maybe something had warmed up. That's why I was wondering about glow plugs.
It can't be the Pilot fuel. The only time I buy the Flying Pilot junk is in an emergency. I usually use T/A fuel with Howes Meaner Cleaner added. But I didn't add an Howes the last time as the T/A was out of it.

I'm pretty sure it has a grid (intake) heater.

You can tell if it is working when you turn on the key, the voltage will drop to 11.9 - 12.2 depending on the temps.

If it doesn't work, then I would guess the relay or a fuse is bad.

Wish I could help ya more maybe it was just a hic-up that 1 time???? Figure what ya have in there as far as pre-heat if anything and like Greg said make sure its working..If problem persist seek professional help..:D

Will give ya a heads up on the battery charger and excessive charging..Keep in mind I am not up on electrical stuff (seek out Turtle) May do ya more harm then good. It doesn't take much to over charge a battery doing it the way you say you are..Better to put the charger on it when it wont start instead of constantly charging em..Firing up the truck every so often for a good 1/2 hour or so should be plenty..

If the battery charger is a Smart Charger, then it's best to leave the charger on all the time when at home, as it will "trickle charge" the batteries to keep them topped off, but will not over charge them.

I use a smart charger. It turns on and off and chooses the amps that it charges at to maintain the batteries automatically.
