MEMORIAL DAY STATEMENT BY ADM. THAD ALLEN, COMMANDANT OF THE COAST GUARD
WASHINGTON - Adm. Thad Allen, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, issued the following statement today concerning Memorial Day:
"With a history that dates back to the Civil War, Memorial Day is set aside to honor and remember those who have sacrificed in service to our Nation. This Memorial Day we remember and honor those who are deployed all across the globe to preserve and protect our freedom as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I encourage every Coast Guard man and woman to find an opportunity - whether at a community event, a local veteran’s hospital, or as you visit a veteran’s cemetery with family or friends - to express your appreciation to a veteran for their sacrifice and service.
"I also ask every American to join us in the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress and sponsored by the White House Commission on Remembrance. Coast Guardsmen, sailors, soldiers, airmen and Marines serving around the world and protecting our shores close to home will pause in a moment of silence for one minute at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day to honor those who died to protect and preserve our freedom. Please pause and reflect on how our fallen comrades in arms stood vigilant for our security, and join me in honoring and remembering them for the sacrifices they made for our country."
