Leo, that is really an awesome story there. I am just stunned, because I have pictured you totally different. I hope I run into you sometime, I feel like we have alot in comon, lots to chat about.
BTW: You have your own authority?

I don't have my own authority. For me it isn't something I want. When I run an outside job Panther gets 15% and I run under their authority and the insurance I'm already paying for through them (at a rate lower than I can get on my own). To get that extra 15% in my pocket I'd have to pay for my own authority, cover their signage when hauling an outside load, have my own insurance on the load and just cost myself more than 15% worth of nuisance.

I'm still thinking a little bit about an Argosy but am afraid the ride won't satisfy me. I'm leaning more toward a conventional class 8 unit. I'm still seriously considering the Columbia from www.sst100.com as well as either KW T600 or T800 with the 86" studio sleeper or the Volvo 780 with the 77" driver workstation sleeper. I believe I could have a 22' box on all except with the Volvo I believe I could have a 24' box. I'm also leaning toward tandems for the 52k gvw although if I go with the sst100 it will get a tag axle eventually for a 42k or so gvw.

I have to agree that Blue Bell is the finest ice cream available. I'm also a native Texan and proud of it.

I love their slogan."We eat all we can and sell the rest"

Now if we could only get FJ to handle it instead of that Blue Bunny junk.

I was especially impressed with the part of the story that read:

"Leo states that he had considered driving for a truck owner before buying his own unit, but, 'I liked the control it gave me, rather than being at the will of somebody else. My impression was that if you run for an owner, you can still say I'll take this load or I'll turn down this load, but they may want to know why you're turning down loads when you can be running and making money.

'Or, you may have a great reason to go home, but it's not a great reason to them. I just felt like I didn't want to answer to anyone else.'"

Newbies are often advised in this Forum to run with a fleet owner before buying your own truck. Leo took a different path - one taken by a majority of newbie expediters, I believe.

Leo well states a reality of fleet driving. No matter how great your fleet owner may be, he or she is still a person that must be considered when any personal decision is made that involves the truck (deadheading home, taking time off, taking a poor load that puts you close to relatives, drilling a hole in the interior to mount a clock or picture or other desired item, vendor preferences such as where to go for oil changes and what brand of tire to buy, where to get the truck washed and how often to wash it, etc.)

That is not to say the advice to drive for a fleet owner first is bad advice. For many folks, it is very good advice indeed. Readers should note that Leo did have a fair amount of business management experience under his belt and a bit of trucking under his belt before he began expediting.

It's nice to see the start-with-your-own-truck point of view expressed in Leo's story and balance in the Forum. And it's nice to have Leo on board as a moderator.

I'm sure I've seen that truck before. Anyway I'll be on the lookout for Leo now. It's nice to run into the people on this site and gab a little. It doesn't happen very often. I put TJ959 on my left storage door to see if I would run into anyone. So far it hasn't worked but it hasn't been on there very long. I'll be glad to buy lunch sometime LEO.

There is a couple driving for Panther in a truck just like this. I believe I've seen one other with Panther logos as well. I'll be looking forward to saying hello some day.
