MBE 900 rebuild

Would any of you fleet owner be able to tell me what it cost to rebuild the MBE 900 engine. I'm looking at purchasing an 07 truck with that eng. and was wondering how much money I should have in the reserve funds. The truck has 400k+ now and I'm guessing that it will need to be rebuilt soon.

Thank you for your time

Depends on who owned it and how well maintained it was, and lastly, whether it was a "Friday afternoon special" or not as to whether or not it will need it soon. I heard of one person that got 900k out of theirs before it pooped the bed, but several others were in the 650-700k mile range before dying.

Rebuilding, from everything I've been told (and I asked.....A LOT), is not worth it. Last quote I got was from Truck Country just south of Milwaukee was $12,500 for a 3/4 block. Mind you, that was at least 15 months ago, so figure the price has risen since then. A 3/4 block does not include turbo, injectors, injector pumps, nor manifolds.....or LABOR. I set aside $25k. All who I asked advised that having engine rebuilt was equal to or more expensive than just buying the block directly from Daimler (Detroit) that has a warranty, and an extension can be bought. That engine is a parent-bore engine (read=no cylinder sleeves/linings).

How about starting with an oil analysis to give you a rough indication of it's health?

Hope that helps.

I had my MBE 900 crack a clyinder wall in March. A factory rebuilt 3/4 block was around 15,000 with new turbo and air pump. Labor and extras took it up to near 23,000.
The worst part is you spend that kind of money plus you are down for about 6 weeks. They don't stock engines and they need to be ordered from Mexico. About 4 weeks by the time it is delivered and another 2 to have it installed.

$25,000 will cover the replacement but not the down time.

The engine had 441,000 on it. No one knows why the block cracked.
Be sure to make provisions for the down time. The engines are known as throw-away engines.

thanks for the help, would it be cheaper to change out the MBE and replace it with a Cat or Cummins?

New ECM, new wiring harness, and the fact that you have no Cummins or CAT core, I'd guess not even close.

Pray, live frugally, and budget for it.

Did I mention.....GET AN OIL ANALYSIS?
