Maybe dumb question

We are having a discussion and would like to see how percent is figured when you drive for fleet owner.
Whoever pays for fuel, gets the 60%, but do you include the surcharge and figure the percent or do you deduct the surcharge and figure the 60/40 split?

I have a load info sheet that I designed, on which I list all pertinent info: pay per mile, load miles, deadhead, fuel surcharge, extra pay (tolls, DH, etc) which I send to the truck owner with the weekly paperwork. He pays 100% FS, 60% load pay, and the extras according to who has to pay the basic costs: DH to me, tolls to him.
LDB says it clearer, but that's the basic idea: clear communication, and fairness.

The side paying for the fuel should get 60% of the linehaul pay and 100% of the fsc pay because they are paying for the fuel. Anything else, in my opinion, is either truck/time pay or people pay. If it's truck pay like liftgate fee I think it should go 100% to the truck owner since they paid to install it and pay for the maint/upkeep on it. If it's time pay like layover/detention I think it should split 50/50 since that's lost earning time to both the truck and the people. If it's people pay like hand load fee it should go 100% to the people unless the truck owner happens to be at the same dock and does part of the labor. As Cheri said, the most important thing is a clear understanding ahead of time along with a written agreement outlining the terms.

I do a 60/40 split with my drivers. They get 60% of all monies except for the fuel surchg, toll & deadhead. I give them 100% of those because they pay for all the fuel & toll. This is all spelled out very clearly in my contract.
