John..just read that article you posted about fleets shrinking quietly. That's some pretty glum news for just one cup of coffee. I hope you're hearing some positive news!

and good morning!

Thinning the herd?....that is a good thing....BUT it seems there are more then ever multi carriers, unmarked bandits everywhere....even doing our loads WE sold to them....go figure...support the enemy...BUT I digress...I suppose it all comes down to the $$$$$$$'s like in any business....

They are our LAST resort trust me to cover a customer. Goes back to enough units in enough places and minimizing brokerage whenever possible. The other problem is more and more carriers claim to be exclusive to us, but are actually running the multi carrier model. It is very frustrating as we have no way to verify this. We do not deal with a high majority of these carriers and many are flat out mad at us for our choice. For us it is about protecting the customer and our fleet, not the money in brokering.

I realize many things can happen to a load....it was a 4 sprinter order and I was the only one around from Load 1.... The rest was brokered.

So this goes back to the never ending balance of how many units we field, avg rev per unit, avg units avail, avg number of loads brokered out, and number of loads missed that we were not able to cover and/or allowed to broker.

Hopefully there are never 4 units where those loads come up from..... There is no need to recruit to cover everywhere all the time, as you said balance.

I agree. It is all about balance. Now 4 units may be a big number in some cities but not a big number in other cities. You always have to quantify those things. Availability and coverage levels are a requirement of many larger national non automotive accounts. So like anything it really comes down to average rev per unit, and maintaining a low average turn time. Those are the key kpi's in my opinion, not the number of units.
