Math 1950-2005

Last week I purchased a sandwich for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2
and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket
and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies,
while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort
and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the
manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she
stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the
evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

2. Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math! In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish
and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a
profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic
for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds
and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no
wrong answers.)

6. Teaching Math In 2005

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la
producciones es $80.

This post is a very sad and also very true commentary on what the liberals have done to our education system. I haven't seen the tears but have seen the deer in headlights look many times. If bin laden only had enough patience he could watch as we implode and disintegrate while following the "it takes a village" nonsense we are being fed and guided to by our liberal losers.

I blame this whole mess on one book and one man, Dr. Spock and his "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Careâ€. I wrote a lot about the failing schools and that book a while ago and don’t want to revisit that horror.

But my experience is similar; there is a McDonalds on Conner Ave in Detroit that was something else. I was told about it once by one of my employees and didn’t believe her until I tried it out myself.

See the people who worked the cash register didn’t not know how give back the correct change and most of the time gave back your original paper money; some of them who were working there was from Wayne Country community college down the road, it wasn’t a Detroit thing. I understood that the drive through cash register was a communal register, everyone used it.

So for example; if your bill came to $4.82 and gave them $10.82, there is a really good chance you got the change for a $10 and the ten dollar bill back.

I always ordered the same thing and always gave them the exact coinage with a large bill and like I said, most of the time I got the change and the bill back but twice I got my exact amount I handed the person and the change.

I don’t know if the management ever caught on, I would assume that through McDonalds auditing they would make sure it was caught, but I dissolved the business soon after my discovery.
