Mapping good parking

Hey, why don't end create an editable google map where members can post good parking spots for CV and ST? That way, when you find yourself in BFE, you could just pull up google maps and see where EO members who have been there before have parked. You'd see the pin in the map and read the address and notes, like "Parking lot on the SW corner, couple of good shade trees, wifi bleeds over from the business next door. Restaurant across the street pretty good, bathroom available there."
Sounds useful to me, or are such parking places like secret fishing holes? It's not like a vanishing resource that can be used up, and the chances of a bunch of us jockeying for them at the same time is slim.

Don't know how "we" became "end." Swype isn't as fast and accurate as I thought it would be.

You answered your own conundrum. Autocorrect can do some funny things.

The map idea sounds good. You start. :)

Hmmm, well, I'm not sure I know how to do that I'm sure I could figure it out on a laptop our desktop, but I think that's what you have to have to create such a map, not a mobile device. I just checked it out and can't find the option to do that on my phone. Anybody else know how?

So you know, here's what I'm talking about, a map of manly barbershops across the country started by The Art of Manliness:

Google has a function for this already. It's not something we'd have to cobble together on our own. I've seen maps others have done, including the one st the address I posted above; I've just never set one up through google maps, myself. Google maps would probably be the best because it's common on smart phones.

Yup. While a GPX file would be handy, getting the updates done, and then distributed, would be a PITA. To do it in Google Maps, it's pretty easy, really.

Go to Google Maps
Make sure you are signed in to your Google account.

On the left side under the the Google Maps logo there are two choices, "Get Directions" and "My Maps"
Go to My Maps

You can then watch the video if you like, or click Learn More to read about it all. I'd do that, and pay close attention to the My Maps section.

When ready, go to My Maps and create a new map, giving it a title and description.

Then you can choose to make the map Unlisted or Public. I would think you'd want to make it public, and if so, I'd choose a Title name that can easily be found in searches, like "ExpediteParking", "EO-Parking" or something as equally catchy and searchable.

Again below the Google Maps logo, below the "Get Directions" and "My Maps" links, there is "Collaborate" and "Import".

Select "Collaborators" and that's where you can add (invite) others to collaborate by adding in their e-mail address. You can also choose to allow, or not, other collaborators to invite additional collaborators, as well as to allow others (all collaborators) to edit the map.

Someone will need to create the map and be in charge (that would be you). You might want to start a new Social Group here on EO for discussion, coordination and stuff. The Social Groups really aren't used the way they could be, and this one sounds tailor made for such a group. Or, a Sticky Thread could be made for general information on it.

You won't be able to create a "My Map" using the Google Maps app on the phone. You'll need to do that through the phone's Web browser at maps.google.com. It'll probably be easier to create and edit on a laptop, but maybe not if you're used to using your phone for everything. I dunno. But once created, you can use the map app, layers, more layers, My Maps, and then select the My Map you want (that's for the Droid. might be slightly different on an iPhone).
