Making Money While Waiting for a Load

I understand that I am talking about alchemy in the trucking business, but what thoughts do any of you have about ways of making money while waiting for a load.

There have been posts about this in the past, but I think it's been quite a while.

Nothing illegal please.:)

Knife blade sharpening was a profitable pastime of an old timer Roberts Express Driver. A father/son team kept busy polishing tanks and wheels during layover. I've often thought windshield ding repair would be a great money making hobby as there are no shortage of dings.

How 'bout pumpkin carving? Contract provision writing assistance.

I do some real estate buying and selling on EBay. It is very easy to buy a cheap piece of property, hold it for two or three months, then resell it for a $1,000 or more than you paid for it.

I was a website programmer for years so I have no shortage of work in my spare time. I do the programming on my laptop while waiting then upload it when I'm at a WiFi hotspot.

Frisco,

Excellent post. Besides making a few dollars on the side - a hobby type job would be a great way to help pass the time.

Mike,

I'm a long time ebayer, and I've known of several drivers who run auctions on downtime. It may take an understanding partner at home to label and ship stuff for you tho. Or, there are several companies who will "drop ship" for you. In this case, you sell iems listed in a wholeseller's catalog, collect the money, pay them via credit card, and they ship directly to the customer for you. I've never done it this way, but I know it is done.
I like to keep my eye out for good deals on CB's etc. Seems there's always someone in truckstops wanting to sell one cheap. Get a good deal, there's my next ebay deal, plus I keep the choice ones!

My wife does Ebay auctions and enjoys it a lot. I have thought about it for myself, but it seems like anything I could do from the truck my wife could do better from home, since she understands the business and has better access to shipping and more room for stock/inventory.
