Looking Ahead

If you could create the ideal company to contract with what would you be looking for?

Anything from a good or bad load TO settlements.

I don't know about "Creating" because I'm not an Owner Operator. I am a Contract Driver/Company Driver. I've often thought about becoming an Owner Operator.

I'm married now for 2 years, and have a 16 month old son. I also have a car payment now, and a house with 5 acres - 2 (two) miles from the I-26/I-385 split where the Pilot is.

That said, I have to make decisions much more carefully now.

Myself, what I'd be seeking - as a driver... fairly simple...

atleast .37 cpm, with no less than 2,000 miles a week. Preferably 2,500 +/- miles a week. Dry Van, Reefer, or Tank, or Flatbed - don't matter to me. it's all freight. Guarranteed home every weekend, or atleast all but maybe 3 to 6 weekends out of the year - and let which wkends not to be home be "somewhat" up to me. Home every weekend as in Home late Friday, and leave out again Late Sunday and/or early Monday AM. Good equipment with a condo bunk since I'm over 6 foot tall. Preferable with benefits on the equipment. like tool boxes and/or fridge/microwave. Choice to have lumpers up to me. choice for loads. No Forced Dispatch. No NYC (will drive it ina bus, but noooo way ina truck). choice of where to fuel when I "need" fuel. No less than 2 truck washes allowed ina month. if I need to get home, get me home. if I want to run, let me run gooooooood. Good maintenance program, if somethings wrong, don't make me wait long. if I gotta layover to have it get fixed, put me up ina close decent motel room that's not in crack town. allow for flexible load/unload times (good time windows) not really tight runs - no 650 mile runs to be done in 11 hours or it's Late? if I have an idea, good or bad, listen to it - and be open to conversation about it. if you don't think it's a good idea - tell me why, from both sides, trucking side and business (financial) side. Get me home for Turkey weekend on Weds. PM, Get me home for Christmas weekend late the 23rd or early (before the sun comes up) the 24th. Get me home for my sons birthday. and get me home for either or both anniversary or wifes birthday.
Give me decent benefits too - that don't realistically cost too much.

Now all of this isn't in exact "priority" order, but you get the idea.

oh ya, and let me and truck (and family/friends?) attend Ky truck show for all 3 days of show - truck would be cleaned before show.

If it don't shine, it ain't mine.

The ideal company would offer me more loads than I could haul, let me turn down all that I wished, permitted me to drive only where I wanted to drive, get me home under load on demand, and pay me more than I was worth. Oh yea. Upon signing on with this company, I should be able to sit in the truck and not wait too long for the roast chicken to fly into my mouth.

Ther is no ideal company.Every company has 1 problem or another, what you may like, I may hate. What I want you may hate.As long as I'm treated honestly, and I get my fare share, alls good
