Anyone have any info on how to find load board's for cargo vans. Thinking about striking out on my own. Pay cant be any worse than it has been lately.

Just a word of caution, there are plenty of crooks out there brokering freight. I word only deal with reputable people. There are publications with rating systems to denouce the bad apples out there. Stick with the big boys of freight brokering and at least you'll get paid. I hope! Landstar brokers a ton of there stuff and there money is good. FYI

Pay may not been any worse.

But you will have to wait 30, 60, 90 and 120 days for your money. Not to mention if at all.

This is a frequent topic in this forum - and from talking to cargo van O/O's - a quick way to the poorhouse.

Then again on the pay...If you think running at .70 is bad try running some the LTL stuff off these boards at whooping .24

I have a had number of people say vans were not getting paid well. I am interested to know are these vans running over the road expedite? If so and you are having these problems I would suggest looking around your town for some local delevery. The people I know with vans are telling me a totaly different story. It is more about how well they are doing. My daughter and her husband bought my ground equipment and run for FED Ex and they cant get all the work done. This post is the third person I have heard saying how bad vans are doing. Seriously check into local RUSH services, DHL, FED EX. That is what I would do. I run staright trucks in this business and other than a day or say at THanksgiving it has looked great. My trucks were even out at TG. They did sit but they were on road and delivered up until the night before. I am not bragging I am only saying I do not see the problem folks are saying they having in these vans. It looks to me like it is still good money running them in town if nothing else.

I have an account with getloaded.com but don't see much on there that's as small as van loads. I use it when I want to get back to Texas to get by the house. Most of what goes on those boards is stuff they want hauled for free but offer slightly more than nothing to haul. I haven't seen one load that pays what I would even call reasonably however if your choice is d/h home or cover operating costs plus a few cents a mile I'll choose the second option. At least half the LTL loads are too heavy for my D unit truck. Of the remainder there are very very few less than 3000 pounds. Good luck to you.

You are usually better off to have specific brokers rather than using load boards. We usually get good rates but at times where it is competitive I may have to pick up two shipments. Pretty easy with a straight truck. With a van you are limited to the east coast. As Lawrence mentioned, it doesn't pay enough in other locations with a van. He is also correct in waiting for your money if you go it alone. At Panther they get 15 percent but you get paid right away. Clearly worth it. I believe Landstar operates the same way. Panther has its regular dispatch but you can set up and broker your own loads. I believe at Landstar you can do the same or use their freight agents. Can certainly be additional income if you know what you are doing in addition to getting out of slow freight areas.

How and where do you find specific brokers?

I look for brokers that handle alot of LTL freight. When starting out, go to a truck stop and call a couple of brokers and ask them what brokers they know that handle LTL freight. Over time you will develop a list for specific areas. I as well get names right from our carrier in the backhaul dept for TT. Most of the ones I use are out west as that is where they are the most advantagous. They are also handy for states like Nebraska. Why wait for days on a load or deadhead all over for nothing? Some companies will not allow you to do this, so make sure you understand your lease.
