I love it when someone comes on here with the employee mentality and suggests that all of these expediting small business owners should go on strike.

It would be like trying to get all the dry cleaners in a city to go on strike so they could charge more for their dry cleaning services.

Dude you drive A sprinter your not even in the loop.

I apologize, X-men, for my spelling errors. I imagine I'm the only one that has that problem typing on keypad of smartphone! lol It's so much easier to pick something apart rather than have a true stance isn't it!? I wish I could be as ignorant as to be able to feel like I accomplished something by attempting to pick apart someone's view. lol I ask you, what would you do to better our profession? I imagine I'll get a wise crack in response since you have no real opinion.

Exactly and two many drivers with family and kids that depend on a check every week. Smart owners adapt and make the ever changing market work for them. In today's world a strike of any significants justbisnt going to happen.

Ask tho see hostess workers how it worked out for them.

so im guessing youre a chosen one that is enjoying a great living and has never seen cheap freight! ha ha what a joke. YOU seem to be the one stuck on the negativity. I'm simply saying that the drivers in this industry are not getting what they're worth wheyher it be bad or good rates in your opinion. I have gotten exactly the response from this post as I surmised(negativity and opposition). Thus post is to try and enlighten. It's simple, brokers pocket money that should be in the pockets of drivers. tThat even applies to Mr. Wolverine that seems to think im complaining about cheap rates personally. Thank you for your feedback, wolverine.

No where have I seen a gun put to anyone's head to work in the industry and if a person doesn't like the rates he or she's paid they should find either a carrier that will pay more or leave the industry.

Like others have said in their own ways we are our own worst enemy when it comes to trucking.

Just to recap what we have learned today.

1. This is a supply and demand business.
2. You are a business person, not a employee
3. You will NOT see a strike from expedite carriers or drivers
4. You can't operate a successful business with a union mentality
5. You can become a broker
6. If you can't deal with 1 through 5 satisfaction may be obtained through union employment somewhere else.

Remember......"businessman first, driver second".

X2, can't agree more

Something Apax72 should learn about business and its simple

If you go out of business tomorrow the only people it affects is your family not mine or anyone's else's in the world. Just simple logic.

Like others have said take care of your business and let the rest of us take care of ours. Most here like what they do and try and better themselves. Try it you might like the outcome.

So, you're telling me that every industry is perfect the way it is and nobody should try to make changes if there is a flaw? Got it.

Why isn't a Sprinter driver in the loop? Of course we are...it all rolls up and down the hill....if truck rates fall, so do ours... and when freight slows, we are the first to feel the pinch, because suddenly, 'big truck' drivers are trying to stack up Sprinter loads to keep moving.

Beachbum, I love the job! I do well for myself as well. That being said it doesn't mean I'm not wanting to make our profession better. Part of my original post involves getting brokers/agents to hire drivers based on more than whether they have the equipment and a valid license. My only complaint is not only the pay, but most have latched onto that because it's the easiest to understand. There are many more issues aside from pay.

I believe the flaw lies with the drivers not the brokers, I try to change it by talking to others about improving the level of professionalism in our industry. A strike would not represent ourselves as professionals but as greedy, blue collar, schlubs.

Who hires the drivers? Now tell me again what is wrong with our industry. It doesn't have to be a strike but there does need to be something done to band us together and put the drivers back in control instead of being "dime a dozen". I ask you, how to we accomplish that and what do you believe needs done to fix our issues?

wow, you're comparing cupcake manufacturing to the industry that puts our goods(including those cupcskes) on the shelves. An industry that if it were to go on strike would cripple many companies. we transport goods, machinery, supplies, etc. and you compare it to cupcakes!? You dont even realize how valuable you are.

If it would cripple things as you say a huge majority of working people would turn on truckers and public opinion of the industry would be worse than ever.

It isn't the spelling errors that bother me, apex. It's the idea that you come in here falsifying yourself as an expediter when, in fact, it's obvious you are a Teamster organizer or you represent some other Commie, subversive group.

I work every day to "better our profession". What have YOU done besides bringing your union-slug ideals from under a rock to challenge us Hard-Working, Honest, Flag-Waving, Patriotic Americans?

God bless America, the free enteprrise system and the law of supply and demand.

Herding housecats comes to mind. I haven't read the whole thread yet, but up to now the opinion seems to be "If you want to strike, be my guest. More work for the rest of us, and maybe higher rates because of less competition."

OK. It's obvious as all heck that you have no understanding at all of this industry. We, for the most part (there may be some exceptions) are NOT employees. We're small businessmen in our own right. So, if I go on strike I suppose I have to picket myself. Can you imagine me walking up and down the street with a sign that declares that I'm unfair to me???

We're ICs. We have, at least to some degree, the right of refusal if a load doesn't strike our fancy. We can, and many do, change carriers if the one we're contracted to now doesn't meet our needs. We enter into contracts, and we can decide to terminate those contracts as need be.

Problem: At least in the vans, getting other drivers to replace us if we go on strike isn't all that hard. If you can find your way home from your left elbow and didn't get lost on your way to the office to fill out the contract, you probably have enough talent to at least try to be an expedited driver. Right now the economy sucks, so-- let us go on strike and watch what happens next.

Note: I signed a contract with the carrier I drive for. It is NOT a union contract. It is an IC contract, therefore if I go on strike, technically it's not against the carrier but against myself since I'm a businessman in this business. Maybe I should negotiate a better contract, since that's the business way of doing things.

That's almost word for word what those dry cleaners would say.

Hey, how is your hand doing? I was reading about what happened and was like dayum. It only takes seconds to wreck yoursefl. I never thought about that kind of crap before I got hurt. What we need is a whole thread about how evil and greedy doctors and insurance companies are. LOL!

It's a little puffy and red around the edges, but I haven't banged it too many times and haven't ripped any of the stitches out. No leaking or bleeding, so I guess that's good. It doesn't really hurt unless I bang it, or move the finger the wrong way. I wanted to come back in service on Monday, but oddly enough I think it's the tetanus shot that's messing me up. I've never had any side effects from a tetanus shot before, other than the normal tenderness of the arm where I got the shot. This time, the tenderness didn't start until after 3 days, and then a few of the other "normal" side effects kicked in, the biggest being fatigue, but also more minor are the headaches, the runs a little bit, a few others. Nothing bad, just really annoying.
