This one is cool, no tantrum, just politeness until his identification is verified.

Bob Dylan Stopped By Cops, Asked For ID In New Jersey Shore Town

(Associated Press) Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.
Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday.

"I don't think she was familiar with his entire body of work," Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses.

The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

"What is your name, sir?" the officer asked.
"Bob Dylan," Dylan said.
"OK, what are you doing here?" the officer asked.
"I'm on tour," the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Blowin' in the Wind" said that he didn't have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night's show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation.
"He couldn't have been any nicer to them," Woolley added.
How did it feel? A Dylan publicist did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Friday.

I personally thing this screams of RACISM. Had he been wondering around a high end neighborhood no one would have questioned him. BUT because a white man was wondering around a poor neighborhood he had to be up to no good. Where is Reverend Sharpton when you really need him.

Racism?? I Don't Think So, But Could be Wrong! Maybe, Just Maybe whoever Called it in was Just Concerned for His Safety as He Probably Didn't Look Like he was From Around There and Maybe Lost! His Clothing Could Have Been an Indication That he didn't belong there as He was Probably Dressed Better than some of the Residents and That He Might Be Mugged! It's Really Hard to Say Why someone Called! And as far as being checked Out goes, As a Police Officer is Called to Suspicious Person and If The Officer doesn't know who he/she is Dealing with then he/she Should ask for some type of ID and if the Subject Doesn't Have any on Him/Her then It's up to the Officers Discretion to see if the Subject would/could accompany them to the Place where he said He was Staying to Provide any other type Of Identification and in Dylans Case he was Identified by One of his Handlers! The officers Apologized for Dylans Inconvenience. And it sure Helps that Dylan was Cooperative as it Could Have Escalated into something Ugly! Think of it this way: At Least he didn't have to walk Back to where he was Staying! :) :D

Maybe his lack of ID was compounded by his mumbling - last time I saw him in concert, I couldn't figure out WHAT he was singing, and I already knew all the lyrics, lol.
I'm wondering though, why 'just walking around' is a reportable behavior.

Read the story again. Dylan played the cops like a fiddle and successfully conned them into a free ride back to his hotel, thereby saving cab fare. ;)

vagrancy laws r unconstitutional. My father was a San Diego Police officer, and in the 1970s he got a call, to investigate a suspicious person in Point
Loma. The subject was a black male with dreadlocks, dirty clothes, no ID, no currency, also spoke in a heavy rasta mon accent. He had no explanation as to why he was hanging out in Point Loma so my dad hooked him up under CA vagrancy law. On the way to the jail the guy dropped the rasta accent and began conversing in the kings proper english. As it turns out he was an ACLU lawyer trying to get hooked up for vagrancy so they could challenge the law. To make a long story short, CA defendEd the arrest al' the way to the supreme court where vagrancy laws in general were thrown out. As it turns out not showing ID or Not having any money is not in and of itself suffient reason to arrest or detain. However, I know it still goes on. Welcome to the police nanny state.

Incidently, that same ACLU lawyer was present at a ceremony where my dad was given a Medal of Valor for a separete incident, I guess this lawyer had a love hate relationship with SDPD.
