Although Union drivers have problems too, a well paid driver usually isn't worrying about how to cover the mortgage this month. Or medical bills.

He can concentrate on the teenager texting coming out that shopping center.

When a driver at Roadway hits 3 million safe miles at Roadway they honor him with a dedicated truck. It has lettering on the door showing his accomplishment, and has his name in large letters.

Being able to concentrate on the job at hand is key to being safe.

It was a great story, except for the reward: the number 50 on his uniform patch, and "special markings on his truck". Woo hoo. An achievement of that caliber deserves more than the little bit UPS is splashing out on it.
I know: safe & accident free driving is it's own reward, but c'mon, this is pretty remarkable! It'd be great to see his face on billboards everywhere, saying "This is how you do it right"
Maybe that would balance some of the ads for "aggressive" driving machines....

What makes it more amazing is that he's in Michigan. Ice,snow, etc.

You'd think a record like this would be easier in Tampa or Orlando, or some other better than average weather city.

My dad drove 44 years otr accident and ticket free before he retired.I think that was pretty good myself. He was in the car a month ago waiting on mom to do her shopping when he was watching a truckdriver trying to back into a dock. After awile he walked over to the guy and talked with him..he was fresh out of school..the driver asked him to back it in when he told him he used to drive..he told him not without showing you how to back it in, which the driver accepted ..the driver was so grateful. He told the driver and showed hin what to look for, etc... things he learned over the years..Dad than pulled it out of the dock and had the driver back it in, which he was able to. Sad that so many drivers come out of school without realty knowing how to do things like that.

Ever notice that UPS regular city drivers are never overweight. They run their buns off!

UPS guys work hard. Under a lot of pressure to perform.
Road drivers get paid hourly.

When Diane and I were in Landstar Express America orientation, the instructor talked about a dilema he and others at Landstar were in. They had a BCO (contractor) reach 40 years safe driving but they had already given him so many awards before for previous safety milestones that they were at a loss for ideas on how to recognize this significant four-decade mark.

I suggested that they give him a bar of gold with the message "You are golden to us" or some such thing. The instructor liked the idea but I never heard what award was actually given.
