Let me allow my bias to peek through and state the "big one" is FedEx Custom Critical. The two closest competitors, I believe, are Conway Now and Landstar Express. These three are followed by PantherII and Tri-State. That, I also believe, would be the "big five" in order of bigness as perceived by the companies themselves.
How do we measure bigness? Is it fleet size?, Is it customer base? Is it gross revenue? Is it most or longest runs per day/week/month? Does it really matter? I think not.
I believe what matters most is the emotional, physical and financial well-being of the owner/operator with regard to his/her relationship with a carrier. If you're earning a fair month's revenue considering your time, effort and monetary investment, your company is big enough.
Worth repeating again and again is the need for a prospective owner/operator, or driver, to determine his or her needs and those of the family. Then Develop a plan and talk to as many recruiters, owners and drivers as necessary to determine which carrier, big or small, can satisfy their needs. There is most likely a similar ratio of driver happiness at the biggest and the smallest carriers.
