Landing Gear Placement

It seems there is no set position for landing gear placement for and aft. Does it matter if they are set further forward near the (tandem) drives, further back or does it really matter?

Isn't the purpose to make sure the truck is stable when loading and unloading, so I would think that the placement depends on the size of the box and where it is on the frame.

The purpose of the landing gear is to keep the truck from squatting down when loading with a forklift. So there really is no particular "sweet spot" needed to achieve this. I would say back far enough from the rear axle so as not to interfere with the drives and forward enough from the ICC bar as not interfere with that.

We are talking straight truck, right? A trailer is a different matter. I have seen pups do a nose dive when being loaded.

For me personally, if I owned a straight truck I would carry a pallet jack and load and unload my truck myself whenever possible. I have seen all kinds of damage done by careless forklift drivers.

That's what I was thinking - if you want to prevent squat and protect the tires then it stands to reason that close to the drives is the ideal spot. There was a 5 ton in front of me at the scale today and I noticed that it had LG (which most don't) back near the bumper - what was notable was that the LG was mounted on a pivot with a brace so it would swing forward presumably to improve departure angle.

I'm lazy too but why get a drill out when you can push a button? LOL

No way , 51...
this one have maintenance issue written all over...
"battery power hydraulic pump , with way too match power , and micro switches in both ends... " , I'm thinking winter in W.I ... ??
not to mentions , up front investment.
will not install any without a safety pin-lock ,it's a roll-over waiting to happen...
one electric short-cut , and you plowing that right lane...

When I drove we had no steekin landing gear....who invented this crap???? Just more dead weight to take away from the cash!!! had many a forklift go on, never any problems with springs or tires, over 15 years never a problem!!!:confused:

What about just dumping the air bags as you back to the dock, then reinflating after getting loaded? :confused:

We have tandems on this truck and no dolly legs, we always dump the airbags before being loaded. Most of the time, if we don't dump the air we are too tall for the dock anyway.

Ah finally some thinkers...I managed about 24 straight trucks back in the early 80's and 8 of them were FL70's much to my chagrin some of the first of the nightmares....single axle and on 7/24 post office contracts...want to see one that can be rougher then an auto worker?? !! They were brutal. Had no L/G and never a problem...The L/G has to go 400 lbs or better! That means more to the front, hence the fork has to come on....since most of the loads are maybe 1-6 containers why even let them on?? And that Sears catologue is heavy....and Victoria Secrets!!! hahaha

Oh who invented them?

The guy who replaced his air bags a couple times when 12000 lbs was shoved on his truck and blowing one of the bags. :p

22 feet of box and less...landing gear?? naw let the air out...
anything over and single axel I could understand the LG. I still think it's alot of weight to haul around.

on all my straight truck i have had landing gear, on my 1800 ud if i hadn't had landing gear would have bust my springs
as they put 7,000 lbs on a 5,000 lbs and i could n't pick up my landing gear and

and ask them how much it weigh they said it's 4,ooo
lbs
said well i can't get my landing gear up
so took the load off
this customer was noted for over loading , trying to get more on the truck and not have to pay for it
