Killer Truck Drivers

Sure there are a few bad apples in every bunch and they do need to be sorted out but that should not reflect on all of us.Truck driveing is supposed to be an occupation but instead has become a reputation and it's not a good one.Just the other day my wife went in to get our fuel ticket and the girl told her she did not look like a truck driver,my wife replied, I'm not a truck driver but I do drive a truck for a living. So what is a truck driver supposed to look like she asked her and the girl snarled her nose,a reputation I say.

A few weeks ago I spent a Saturday night at a Love's in Wyoming. On Sunday mornings I always get online and find a church fairly close to wherever I'm staying and then I get myself cleaned up nice and go. I put on some nice clothes and then went inside to get a shower. When I approached the fuel desk and asked for a shower the guy behind the counter told me that the showers are only for truckers. I asked him if truckers are allowed to look presentable on Sunday and then he gave me the shower. Then when I was coming out of the shower area I overheard someone else complain to the guy behind the counter about the showers only being for truckers.

That wasn't the first time this has happened to me. I routinely wear khakis and golf shirts when I'm working and I have gone in for showers or into a driver's lounge and had people try to kick me out for not being a trucker.

Just where is the rule written showers are only for truckers ? Not that anybody else would want to pay $10 for a fuel stop shower .

Charles... shoulda asked em if it would help if you went outside and wallowed in the mud a bit first. Maybe put a shirt on two sizes too small, with ketchup stains on it. Make sure your butt crack is showing.

To EAT the buffet, you have to WEAR the buffet! WOOOH!!!

Maybe that would work. Anyway, that does illustrate what I see as a problem with the trucking industry as a whole, and that is the image that is being put out there by a lot of drivers. If I have been told on more than one occasion that the lounge is for drivers because someone didn't think I looked like a driver, what does that say about the image drivers have?

I did not want to hijack Gottago, that was just an example of how all truck drivers are judged by what just a small portion present to the public.Every time someone is hurt or killed by a driver we all become the enemy to the public,I have allways thought that the july sting should be extended to maybe 365 days a year, rules and laws will not be followed if they do not inforce them,it would not take long to weed out the outlaws. They make the rules to keep the public happy then thats the end of it untill someone is hurt or killed then they inforce the law on that driver while the others like him run our roads.Protect your reputation, live by the rules and don't forget to shower.LOL

I get told that I don't "look" like a truck driver all of the time. It is a constant. For instance when the insurance and ticket repair saleswomen are plying their trade at the truckstop they never try to sell to me. One day a woman at a FJ told me I did not look like a truckdriver so out of curosity I asked her "what does a truckdriver look like". She replied, as she hunched her back and flexed her mucles, "you know". Hmmmmmm! My guess is we're either suppose to look 'dirty' or 'manly', or both! lol :D
Myself, I like a daily shower, my nails nicely manicured, I like my hair neatly ponytailed and clean. A little natural make-up. I prefer black leather pumps (actually, I don't even own tennis shoes or work boots), dress jeans or slacks and a nicely ironed blouse or freshly laundered pull-over. Hmmmm, just have never been able to fit into the dirty manly stigma of a female truckdriver!

Isn't it kind of funny..in a weird sort of way...how people tend to "picture" the following: truck drivers, preachers, teachers, nurses...to name a few. When I asked some random people how do they 'picture' these people, here's some of the answers I got:

TRUCK DRIVER: an over weight man wearing a stained/dirty t-shirt that doesn't quite fit over his big belly; dirty blue dickies pants that show part of a 'plumber's crack' when he bends over; a big ole stoggie sticking out of his mouth; and a dirty baseball cap on his head.

PREACHERS: Men, usually on the tall, thin side, wearing a a dark suit & tie with a crisp, white shirt; holding a bible in one hand when preaching a 'hell & brimstone' sermon', banging his fist on the podium to emphasize parts of his sermon.

TEACHERS: An older lady with grayish hair wearing a dress, kinda on the old fashioned side; speaking in a quiet, soft tone to the children; having a bright, shiney apple on the desk; standing before a black chalkboard

NURSES: a woman wearing a crisp white uniform with white stockings and white shoes; having cold hands (I particularely liked that one)

My point to all this is this: even though we're SUPPOSED to be in the 'modern' world nowadays, some people still have the misconception of judging people like, truck drivers, in the old sterotype. Geez....you should've seen all the strange looks and hear all the comments I used to get when I first started driving truck. I'm very short and a female, so I had a double whammy right from the start....when people asked me what I did for a living & I told them I drove truck, they thought I was pulling their leg. "Short females can't drive a big truck" was one of the most common statements I'd hear. It used to irk me so much that at times, I'd tell my hubby that "...if one more person tells me that, I'm gonna pop them one..." OK, let's face it..first off I'd never pop anyone...secondly even if I did, just how much damage could I do when I barely come up to most people's knees?? :)

I think that by smileing politely & turning the tables on the person by asking them just what do you think a truck driver, nurse, teacher, etc is supposed to look like is a GREAT response. Those of you who have been doing that already are to be commended. Maybe if enough of us to that when we're faced in that kind of situation it might help to change some of the misconceptions.

The article is unfair in that it leads the reader to come to the conclusion that all truck drivers are medically unfit to drive. The media seems to lean towards that stereotype in their reports and articles quite often and the general public, for the most part, believes what they read and hear. The few "bad apples" are the ones most remembered and the public forms their impressions and opinions of the whole based on the incidents of those few.

It is up to the rest of us to change the image of a truck driver in the minds of the public by continued safety, conduct, public appearance and attitude. The image of drivers today can be changed, it will just take time and persistance.

The report mentioned sleep apnea without pointing out that there is treatment available to drivers, in their trucks.
Also, in Indiana, CDL's are suspended if drivers don't have current DOT physicals. That would fulfill the proposed nationwide data base suggestion.

But that would just make too much sense. We can't have that happening.

The article takes what is a legitimate problem in some cases, and turns it into a "scare piece" for the masses. Typical reporting

I constantly get " Oh, you drive too?"

What do you expect from those phony, plastic haired, over dressed, made-up, ambulance chasing, media types. They just make up the news to get ratings. If it bleeds it leads.
Uh, am I stereo typing?

My son works in a truck service shop & looks like a trucker\biker. My sister is a circut riding preacher. My wife is a nurse who dosen't own a crisp, white uniform. I "look like" a trucker and am unemployed \ semi-retired.
