In the summer when kids are on vacation are they allowed to go ride with you and if so at what age.

Hi Steph,

Welcome to EO!

I don't know of any Carrier that would allow anyone under 21 in the vehicle while on a load. You can buy passenger insurance but I think they have a 21 year old clause as well.

Thanks,
Lawrence

Wonderful subject, kids on a trip. I have many mixed thoughts about kids being on the truck. Most companies will allow a child at the age 12 and older. There are few that will let younger children on the truck, but I am sure you have to sign a statement, if anything was to happen, the company is not responsible in anyway.

But, when you have a child/children on the truck be prepared to have your world upside down. There are companies out there that will not allow children on their premises so that could stop you from being dispatched on that load. Now you have driven all night, the child has slept all night, you need to sleep. Will you be able to? Will the child stay locked up in the truck while you sleep, or will they sneak out of the truck. Granted this is the worse case stated, but I have seen it happen. So many unexpected things can go wrong with a child on the truck.

Now, on the other hand, its a good idea. You will get to really know your child. They will finally get to see who you are and what you do.
Given some children attitude, this could be a life changing experience for the whole family.

As you see I have really tried to think this out and still have mixed thoughts. I bet a few of you have some stories to tell about having a child on the truck.

Hmmm kids on the truck huh...well i have 2 ten yr old boys and i'm based out of quebec canada i did a short run to boston about 3 months ago and brought the 2 of them with me crossing the border was fine but it's when they were beating the cr*p out of one another swinging off the upeer bunk and practicing WWF moves while pushing each other to the front of the truck needless to say by the end of my day trip i said NEVER AGAIN heheheh. But when it's only one of them they just sit there and look out the window or watch me miss a gear or if i'm lucky they sleep while i do i work for a small expedite company and my boss doesnt mind them coming with me but i will never bring both of them again at the same time BIG MISTAKE!!!!!! so beware if you have a couple of kids and decxide to turn your run into a family outing it'll easily turn into a CAN I ABANDON THESE KIDS AT THE NEAREST TRUCK STOP hehehe

so kids on a truck is not always a good idea

x06col I’m on your side. This isn’t some family outing or some site seeing trip. Expediting is a business, just like going to the office or working in the mill. If you worked in an office would you take your kids there? Although it would be a much safer place for the child to be. Your boss would be in your face like white on rice. Why would these carriers allow for someone to bring their kids on a trip. Seams to me they would be opening a can of worms they can’t deal with!

I suggest that if you do take your kids on a trip, you cover you butts real good. I saw a trooper pull a truck over and there was a child in it. The trooper had CYS take the child, and he hauled the driver off to jail. I never did find out what happened after that. But! Why go through all that?

I also read a story of a driver delivering a load one summer and had his family with him. He was in Georgia on the freeway when some nut started shooting anything in site. Turned out that this drivers son sleeping in the back took a bullet in the side and died. Why take a chance?

Simple matter of checking with your company and seeing what their rider policy is. Some say no way, others make you purchase extra insurance, some don't care. Unless for a VERY short period of time, (From your house to the truck stop for fuel and back) I could not at all recommend taking kids with you in an expedite truck on trips, as there is little schedule to it and you hardly have time to concentrate yourself, none the less mind children.
