Just Wondering....

I noticed that the recent writers strike were a major concern. There were a lot of movies and TV programs that were put on hold and a concern if the strike would last too long.

I wonder why we heard nothing about how the public would tired of the hype of overpaid writers who gve us cr*p being poor and not getting our entertainment. But rather three weeks before the strike was settled, we heard the fear that the Screen Actor's Gild would have to cancel their awards show and the Oscars are in danger of being canceled.

Shouldn't we, the people who actually give the the money to make a living at what ever they do, count?

I don't think they really give a rip what we think. As long as we keep spending our money at the movies and what not. Until everyone quits going to the movies they most likely will not care.

If I understand the writers' strike, some of the issues are about financial payment when replaying some of the shows on different venues. In other words, reruns. I used to work for GM in the starter plant. Shouldn't I get one or two cents whenever someone starts his or her car? Isn't it about the same thing? Before you truckin' guys start to scream, I didn't work in the heavy duty (truck) starter plant.

Prof, by all accounts, you should get paid for each starter they sell and install under the same mindset.

The writers seem to me very greedy, they get paid for a job to begin with and should not get a thing beyond that payment.

I compare it to the Pharma company I worked for. So I am sitting at my desk in the research department fiddling around with a program to create compounds and find a few that don't exists by accident. I run one compound model through another program and it shows that it will attack Cancer cells, so I run over to show the scientists what I discovered. My work so far has produced only an idea, and my fiddling produced some results with models. So they, the scientist get working on the compound I discovered and they found that indeed it sure does do what the models suggest. So they present it to the R&D board for approval on researching it and get approved - so far it is still my idea. Then it goes through the research phase and up for review to see if it makes money for the company, my idea still. Well it now goes into development and now the company wants me to name it, so I name it and it goes through phase 1, 2, and 3 studies and gets the green light from company for a New Drug Application. It gets the approval from the FDA and the marketing department puts a lot of money into marketing it and starts to sell it, making billions of dollars.

On every pill or treatment, I get zero.

For the drug patent, my name is not on it.

For the use of the name I created, I get zero.

All because I was hired to do a job and I got paid for it.

Oh the same goes for any thing I create while I am under thier employee for them or at work. Research papers were one item if we wanted to present to a conference as an employee of the company, it needed to be approved by the copyright office of the company.

I think that the writers in Hollywood don't deserve a dime beyond their over paid salaries and they should be thankful for that with the cr*p they turn out we watch the shows that they write for.
