Just sittin'

We are new to expediting, and signed on 7 weeks ago with Bolt Express. We are running team in a Ford 350 Cargo Van. The first two full weeks after orientation, we were busy day and night. Then things began to slow down. Last week we made two runs paying less than $350 each. On Friday we gave up and came home (North Carolina). As of this minute we are still waiting for a run. Dispatch told us at 10:00 this morning to deadhead to Knoxville, TN and wait. We're STILL waiting!
Is this how expediting is - or are things really slow right now - or are we just with the wrong company? We have never turned down a load, and we have never been late on a delivery. And, as far as we know we haven't made the dispatchers mad.
Can any of you experienced expediters give us any suggestions. Those van payments are still coming, but the pay ain't! :(
Weave, I know you live in our area, can you give us any advice?

Weave lives in up state NY. He may have gone back on the road. I know Bolt is a smaller company than some of the others out there, but to say you are with the wrong company I couldn't do. May try calling the company you work for and be straight up with them. If your not making the miles you have to move on.

Thanks, Teacel. I don't kow where I got that Weave lived around here!
I did just what you suggested, and they said everything was really slow because everybody had shut down for Easter and it would pick back up. Is this just more bull, or is everybody slow?

Ah, the waiting is no fun at all. Don't panic yet, it is part of the business.

I suggest that you call your contact with your carrier and ask them for some guidance. I would move a step above dispatch as they are generally overwhelmed with trying to get loads covered and customer service issues.

By getting a person above dispatch they can maybe track your last few weeks and offer some insight.

You did say you ran hot and heavy for a few weeks then hit a dry spot. This is very typical in this business. Like I said don't panic yet - it is typical and EVERYONE goes through it.

Well No, Pelican, We're not 'just sittin' right now! Actually we're running for near nothin'! On our way back home (deadheading from Illinois) we got a call to go by Lance here in Charlotte and pick up 6 boxes of potato chips and take them up near y'all. Then we deadheaded back home! Now if you don't think that's rakin' in the bucks!
Then, I really wanted to go down to our little farm in Mississippi this weekend anyhow - but we didn't tell them to take us off the board (the way things have been we figured they wouldn't call us anyhow) and we'd sign off when we got ready to leave this afternoon. Of course, about the time we got everything ready to go the phone rings! Guess who! Yep, Bolt! "We've got a run to Arkansas, pays real good", they said. (That's a change!) So, cancel the trip to Mississippi and it's off to Arkansas. Where we'll sit another - who knows how long?
But, like I say - Truly God is good, life's fun & there's always the EO Forum to brighten up our day!
Keep feeding that inquiring mind, and we'll catch ya later.

Yep that is how it is. If you want to stay busy just keep planning to do something like go shopping. We always get a load when we are trying to head for Wal Mart. lol Sometimes we pretend to plan on a trip or something to help out the load gods need to give us work.
