We were sitting at the Petro last night, got quite a bit of hail and rain, but surprisingly little wind. The Flying J is pretty much destroyed. We had to detour to our pickup this morning and took us right by there. Trucks rolled, fuel island and building have major damage, uprooted trees and power lines down everywhere.
If you're coming to Joplin, the truckstops at Exit 4 are ok.
Say a prayer for these people, they are going to need it :(

It's sad. When you go through these places it gives you more of a connection when you see something has happened to them.

I just went thru there the night before. Scary crappola! I saw what seemed to be a super cell just west of 55 rolling thru IL. Considering all the tornados in the neighboring states, I wouldn't doubt that's what it was.

The Joplin Petro recently expanded its facilities and had their grand opening on Friday and Saturday. Talk about timing!

They had just finished removing the last of the parking blocks that had been used to section off the show when the storm rolled in.

It is a sad day for those people. I do, however, have little doubt that they will pull together quickly and get things up and running in no time.

I just had a load offer going there, but didn't win it. Some relief supplies or replacing something, I'd guess.

Death toll keeps climbing.

The National Weather Service later estimated the Joplin tornado had winds up to 198 mph, making it an EF4 — the second strongest category.

As the toll currently stands (116), the Joplin tornado is the ninth deadliest on record. It tops the toll from a 1953 storm that killed 115 people in Flint, Mich.An 1899 tornado killed 117 people in Wisconsin.

More severe storms are coming, with Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma expected see tornadoes Monday and Tuesday and the bad weather spreading to the East Coast by Friday.

Joplin Tornado upgraded to Cat 5. Winds in excess of 200 mph. Just passed through Joplin earlier today. OMG it is really bad. Headed to Tulsa then on to OK City, Ok. Tornadoes on the ground in Ok City. Sure hoping we don't encounter one. East bound trucks keep saying turn around tornadoes on the ground. Hmmmmm scary.
