I've just realized something about the Ford cutaways and cab chassis...

Unlike the E-Series, you can actually get Transit cutaways from the factory that are UNDER 10000 GVW.

Maybe this is Ford's way of saying "OOPS, our bad!"

It is very common for the after market upfitter to de-rate the GVWR of a chassis to under 10,000.

The cutaways also come in a long wheelbase unlike the vans

What is the advantage of this? To my way of thinking, not much.
You have a higher curb weight with this, then the under 10K rating doesn't give you much breathing room for payload. So, you have a box that can fit 4 pallets, but if you try it you're overweight. Or am I missing something?

4 pallets doesn't always mean heavy. I have had single pallets put me at my limit and a full van keep me under it.

I know that you can have light, bulky loads, and heavy dense loads. My problem is that the big (by my standards anyway) box invites you to put something in it, and seeing a payload rating that is less than my present standard 2500 van is capable of puts a damper on any desire to have that big box.

Of course, if you're doing big volume/low weight loads then an under 10K cutaway might be just what you need.

Just personly speaking the fuel mileage loss would be the first thing that would keep me away from a box.
