Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket funeral for seven dead Perry County siblings | PennLive.com

Westboro Baptist Church, the controversial group that just won a free speech Supreme Court case related to picketing soldiers' funerals, says it is planning to protest at the funeral for seven Perry County children who died in a fire Tuesday night.

"I'm baffled that they would choose this," said Perry County District Attorney Charles F. Chenot, III."This is a family that’s obviously apparently Christian in their beliefs and certainly shouldn't conflict with the beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church."

Chenot said he will be alerting state police to the announcement, and it will mean there will be a law enforcement presence at the services, too.

Westboro's press release says the children's death is linked to the Supreme Court case, in which a York County father sued the church after it protested and made homophobic statements about his son, a Marine killed in Iraq.

Westboro blames society and the Perry County children's parents for their deaths in this release: Westboro.PDF

A recent ruling in their favor says they can be in any public space. That means cemeteries that are open to the public, Chenot said.

"The bottom line is that they can’t interfere with the funeral itself," he said. "They can’t block people. If they made enough noise that they overpowered the minister ... they could be cited for disorderly conduct."

The church has threatened to picket military funerals in Perry County before, Chenot said. They did not show up to those funerals, and Chenot says he hopes that this, too, is an empty threat.

"I suspect this is just to get attention," he said. "That’s the only reason I can think they would want to attend this funeral. This group doesn’t include soldiers or homosexuals -- the groups they are usually barking about."

Still, a police presence will be assembled, just in case. "Will there be some vigilante justice? I hope not," Chenot said. "But I think the potential is there."

So do people who follow Micheal Moore, fans of Charley Sheen, Charley Sheen, all of Hollywood and a number of conservatives and liberals alike so what's the difference?

So after complaining about it, who is going to go in their trucks and protest against them peacefully?

What good would it do to protest them? I have no doubt that if I were to do that I would be called names, said I don't believe in the Constitution AND be anti-Baptist. I bet even some in here would say things like that about me.

MOST wackos don't carry it as far as this bunch does. They are so far beyond normal they are like in another universe. There is just no valid reason for this stupidity or to support them. NONE! PERIOD!! END OF SKED!! K K AR K!! (and all that other radio talk)

Layout, you must be in another universe today.

When they are confronted with people who don't back down, like those in the towns who blocked their access, they back down. Protesting them means doing what ever it takes peacefully and in numbers.

North Carolina IS another universe. They are not here, how can I protest them? Is surrounding them with tanks, with flowers painted on the sides peaceful enough for you? Works for me!!

Hey, would a division of tanks with flowers painted on the sides be considered a "Pansy" division?

No Layout, like anything else that you commit yourself to, you get into your truck, call those FedEx people and ask for something going in that direction. Then from there you go there to show your support.

FedEx does NOT do directional dispatch. Right now I am committed to my D.U. Dinner.

Yes they do, all you have to do is ask and be nice to them.

Why would you go to a DUI dinner?

The supreme court gave them the right to protest military funerals under the 1st. Amendment. I will invite them to start their protest in my front yard, Then we'll see if their 1st. Amendment is better than my 2nd. Amendment!

NOt DUI, D.U. , as in Ducks Unlimited and I am not just "going" my wife and I work the dinner each year. We are committee members and sponsors. I also work the Michigan Duck Hunters Tournament and Point Mouillie Waterfowl Festival each September.

Next they will be protesting new recruits going to bootcamp, or new borns at a hospital, or abortion clinics, or Walmart stores that stay open 24/7,my they will wear themselves out when they get going. Maybe we should send them some ideas too.:D

Did anybody see the Phelps woman on FNS about a week ago? She must be an accomplished attorney since she argued her case successfully to the Supreme Court. But from the way she acted that Sunday it's fair to say she's nutty as a Christmas fruitcake. It's too bad the press doesn't just ignore them like streakers at a soccer match.

What's too bad is that there is a way to discourage them, exercising our own right to free speech. Volunteers have helped by taking all available parking [the WBC needs to publicize their plans in advance, of course], then surrounding the grieving family with a ring of silent support.
When the WBC announced plans to picket the funeral for Christina Green [the 9 year old killed in the Tucson shooting], I planned to go to Tucson to add my presence to the counterprotesters. I've never joined a protest before, but this is a cause I believe needs to be successful. And I'm willing to suffer a little disruption of my plans, if it will help disrupt the WBC's plans.
They changed their minds [accepted a bribe of free radio time instead], but I'm keeping my eye out for more opportunities to help put an end to their offensive behavior, and I hope a LOT of others are, too.

I find the funeral protests disrespectful and hateful, but I am grateful we live in a country where we can express ourselves. Freedom of speech has to be all or nothing otherwise it isn't free...

What good would it do to protest them?

I used to believe that "there's no such thing as a stupid question" - this one changed my mind.

The good it would do is protecting the grieving family & friends from an unwanted intrusion by sociopathic fanatics, without any violence or even civil disobedience.
It would show that some folks are capable of responding to the exercise of free speech by exercising their own in like fashion.
It would make a powerful statement to everyone, particularly the children we taught/are teaching to solve problems without resorting to violence.
That's what good it would do.
