Is U.S. Manufacturing Coming Back? - Inbound Logistics

sounds positive....

Global technology and energy company GE has put reshoring to work. In early 2011, GE moved production of its energy-efficient water heater from Chinese contractors to its own factory in Louisville, Ky., in order to accelerate cycle time and speed new product launches.
The company took advantage of a 2005 labor contract under which Louisville plant employees are paid an average of $13 an hour, down from $22 prior to the agreement. GE also earned state and local tax credits of $25 million over 10 years, and federal incentives that encourage the manufacture of energy-saving products.
Making the device in Louisville already has allowed engineers to work closely with production managers and assembly-line workers to perfect the product's design via rapid prototyping. By improving the efficiency of the design process, GE has cut per-unit costs by $20.

Reshoring Takes Hold

Many companies reconsidering the advantages of manufacturing in the United States begin by making incremental moves. Here are some examples of businesses that brought production of specific components or models back from overseas, or created U.S. jobs instead of operating in offshore locations.

Nissan will shift production of its lithium-ion batteries for the LEAF zero-emission vehicle from Japan to localized manufacturing, re-tooling an existing assembly plant in Tennessee.

NCR Corp. opened a new 350,000-square-foot ATM manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ga., to produce ATMs for the North American market, bringing production back to the United States from China, India, and Hungary.

Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. and Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America transferred production of new all-terrain vehicle models from overseas facilities to its state-of-the-art factory in Newnan, Ga.

Ford Motor Company will bring in-house approximately 1,975 hourly jobs that would be performed by suppliers inside and outside of the United States, exceeding its original commitment to the United Auto Workers by more than 25 percent.

Embraer opened its first U.S. aircraft final assembly plant in Melbourne, Fla.

Electrolux will build a new cooking products factory in Tennessee, representing a shift from Canada.

Sleek Audio, which produces high-end earphones, moved its manufacturing back to the United States after a three-year foray into China.

LOL, and Ford...yea the UAW allowed them to bring jobs back here and pay them $10-$12 and hour after Ford agreed to pay each of their existing employees a $6000 bonus to pass the new contract....

Then in add in the automation and robots and the number of jobs brought back here will be half of the number of jobs that were sent there to begin with...

its all "smoke and mirror"...politics....you know there is an Election coming...barrys buddies giving him something to talk about...Politics..

As good as this sounds, many pundits are saying this month is when the next crash will occur. Last one I read, iirc, was Roubini. But it could have been Celente...don't remember.

I forget what town this was, but the Pilot is right across from a walmart. They were putting the finishing touches on the outbuildings where small businesses would usually move in. No clue how many of them were leased, but in today's business climate, I sure wouldn't have undertaken (or underwritten) that project!

It would be foolish to start out expand a business with that crazy man in the White House. He's capable of anything, including nationalizing all industry. One more reason to put the adults back in charge.

I don't care which president or party does it but they need to make the US a friendly place to do business especially for manufacturing.

Good luck with that happening anytime soon.., especially with the anti business "statist" pos idiot that occupies the WH now....well unless you are union business, then forgetaboutit....opps, i forgot, or a "Green" business that barry needs to build up and showoff...then you can get all knids of money and have the rules bent for you...and it helps if you are one of his "bundlers" also....

I figure its just a dream but maybe next time. Imagine how much money a unionized solar energy plant could get? Probably more than the half a billion that we just got ripped off for.

But it seems to me that the idea that there is a need to make it a freindly place is actualyl a false premise seeing that we are seeing a return of jobs, most of them through government money thrown at some of these companies.

Nissan is like other companies who see both a surplus of labor and the connected sales in the US market more of a reason to make things here as opposed to Japan. Like the cars they made, they all started over there in Japan at one time and moved here.

BUT Ford is a perplexing issue, they were threatened by the UAW, at the same time have to bring some stuff here to make in order to make sales in the US market. Again it will end up for them, as much as it will end up for GM the problem of sustainability in the US market and I have a feeling we will eventually see another "auto recession" because they are not flexible enough to respond to the market as their US based competitors are.

By the way, Ford held out until the very last for the Ford Transit, it will be "built" by UAW workers here instead of in Mexico, this I heard includes a crap load of incentives by the state and feds.

Maybe the Transit being built here rather than is Mexico will turn out for the better anyway, if these M2's are any example of Mexican production.

I think these guys are smelling a trades war in 2012 if the Republicans take over. Be cheaper to bring back some manufacturing then to pay more import duties and risk limiting imports if the economy picks up.

I won't put much credence in that, I think they control quality better in Mexico on a number of different levels and don't have to fight the workers or the union on training or QA issues.

I spent a little time on a GM line late yesterday afternoon and got to tell you I would not buy one of them POS vehicles ever - period.

I heard today there is a movement to do this with China and it is all just like 1930 and how hoover saw a way out of the depression by raising tariffs which pretty much killed the economy. The republicans would better serve the country by staying the hell out of the issue.

I saw a major drop in quality when Lowrance and Eagle moved their production down to Mexico. When I talked to them they said it was cheaper to replace bad units than to make higher quality units here. Talking with friends still in that business nothing has changed. They still have a high fail rate.
