How many miles have you done in the past three weeks Guido? How much money did you spend on buying and fixing up your cargo van? Please come back to this post once you've broken even with just the cost of your cargo van! You haven't even broke even yet!

Trying to figure out how you would know who has?

Vans are like cheap tools, the investment isn't that great but if used right they will make you money and if they break they are cheap to replaced - just don't abuse them.

Theres always hope for the cargo van,Plan your work and work your plan. The ones that understand this business will do good, those that don't won't.

IMO right now C/V's are being used/exploited with rates being cut to bare bones to help bolster/finance sweetheart deals for straight truck fleet owners....

As of this writing E-1 is the lowest paid CV of the major players...

Exactly.....know your bottom line and don't run unprofitable loads....and rake them over the coals every chance you get...don't give them a break because at these rates the carriers are doing absolutely NOTHING to help you out despite all the patting of the back....

Oh yea it is helping those straight truck owners a lot.

Do you really think the exploitation of the van population will last?

In bold....you being sarcastic?

2nd ? Yes, as long as new people keep coming and others run the crappy loads.... example wait for a day to run a .70 load for 145 miles and drop to the bottom of the list then repeat the above..

At the time of this post, I will say that I can see rates are bouncing back, but CV rates are returning slower that straights or tractors. I'm not sure about any sweetheart deals affecting this, as much it is an entry level vehicle into the business, and right now there is still a glut of them. Lots of folks jumped out because of the downturn in the rates that they knew. Lots of folks jumped in, because they lost their job at the factory. The competition for shippers who use cargo vans a lot is still stiff. They shop them alot.

Yes Jeff. And their finding things a bunch tuffer sitt'in in their minimal expense and effort van while actually having to figgure things out. It just ain't the same as shirking, hiding and passing the buk at the factory.

Are you sure about that? It hasn't been that long ago that one of the carriers posted 65 cents per mile for cargo vans with a fuel surcharge SOMETIMES. Is E-1 below that?

I have the benefit of 20 years in expediting with vans. I believe it is the perfect business for someone like myself who was able to retire early (44) and can afford to have a bad week or two and not lose my home or starve my family. If you are looking for a steady check, you might better become a company driver on a dedicated run. A young couple without dependents, willing to work hard, could after a number of years, make a good income. They would have to own a truck with out all the bells and whistles, take the good with the bad runs and work nearly year round without a long break. They could save a substantial amount of their income, buy a home, start their careers and family.
I look at my run books from 1989 and nearly cry when I realize the pay per mile was well above current rates. Of course fuel was much cheaper as was nearly everything else. A less than $1000.00 week was unheard of and Sat. and Sun. runs were common. I still shake my head at those who purchase new vans when by looking diligently, you can find one with 10-15 thousand miles left on the warranty at a huge discount over a new van. I just purchased a 2008 Ford with 8500 miles. Great price, great interest rate (2.99%) - FYI - I do not bargain with the salesman, I ask them to call me in 3 days with the best out the door price. Let them know you are going to be buying and that you will be looking at many vans.

Why do vans get FSC?
It seems to me that the companies can eliminate them and the vans will still take the freight away from the straights.

If a van "takes away " a load from a straight truck, perhaps it was really a van load in the first place.

In this challenging time of expediting maybe more shippers are sizing the vehicle to fit the load.

Hope for vans? Heck yes!

With a prudent OWNER OPERATOR BEHIND THE WHEEL a van has always been a money maker.

In spite of the low rates today the future for vans will only get better.

In my opinion

I believe there is a place for just about every size truck. Just a matter of how it is utilized.
