just to answer the question from the topic, not the post - I am trying to figure out if Canada is really necessary?

Sorry, I am too bored today.

Really, I think NYC can be a pain if you haven't been there before. I have been there a lot of times in the early 80's and it has not changed much. Canada really is a pain for most because they have to DH out of there and I just build that into my load offers when they come to me in other words that is my plan to DH out of Canada.

We feel Canada is necessary and we will get into a certain area and go often and then we can go a few months and not even get a load offer. We very seldom dead head out of Canada so do not factor that into taking a load. We also do not like to buy fuel up there so if we have to very far into Canada we need a little more pay for the load to pay the additional costs.

As for NYC we feel the wear and tear on your truck and also on your body is just about not worth it. The load has to pay very well before we will go into Manhattan. We do go to Long Island often and do not mind that to much. We feel as if NYC is for those that know the area and how to get around the easiest.

Everytime you put a limitation on your load selection it makes the pie smaller.
Since Canada is going strong in the auto sector if the loads represent just 10% of all loads for a day thats a 10% hit on your income and so forth for NYC.
Take that in relativety to your pay and think about it.

And for petes sake for those that don't do Canada and NYC you have NO right to complain that you've sat for 3-4 days without a load.

We ran with Tri-State and never took loads into Canada or NYC....
well, ran two loads to Canada and ended up deadheading out.....
And we never "sat" because we didn't do canada or NYC..........they always kept us busy, no matter where we were......I take that back, took a load to Calexico, Ca. Sat in California for what seemed like forever. But then that's the west coast for ya.
Tri-State won't penalize you or skip over you just because you don't want to go to those places. They never gave us a problem with it...
They figure if you don't want to go to Canada or NYC that's ok with them....
We really enjoyed running for Tri-State......I'd say go for it....don't think you'll have any regrets.

Landstar Express America pays an additional $200.00 for any pick-up or delivery within the 5 Boro's.

Personally I have no problem with runs in NYC though Friday going to JFK can be difficult.

Only had a few runs into Canada when I was a driver for O/O leased with FedEx CC had to deadhead out each time. Enjoyed the experience but financially it wasn't good business decision.

I have talked to a few van O/O who have said that they are on a no Canada contract with The Big Kitty. Even though it pays 2 or 3 cents a mile less, they don't have to mess with Canada. They said when they were in the Detroit area they would get loads out because the Canada contract vans were being held in the area for Canada bound loads. They said they didn't know any difference in their monthly or yearly earnings.

If we closed the boarders auto and truck dealers would have a very limited inventory . Dodge truck lovers would be very upset they could no longer get their Megacab . ;) The only problem I see is Canada using Michigan landfills to dispose of most of their refuse . Border delays would decrease considerably with the absence of the trash haulers . http://www.macombdaily.com/stories/030806/loc_trash001.shtml

Canada is very necessary for Canadians. If it wasn't for Canada, Canadians wouldn't have a country. Therefore they wouldn't be Canadians or Canadiens. Aslo there would be no "ultimate fighting", I mean hockey. Eh!

you are soooooo right about the trash, can't figure out why our state even is allowing this, especially the enviornuts.

"Last year, the landfill handled 5.3 million cubic yards of Canadian refuse -- enough to fill nearly 1,000 football fields with garbage stacked 3 feet high."

About the truck issue, I though that all Dodge trucks were actually built in Mexico. I think that our sole supply for Caravans are exclusive Canadian.

The smaller Ram and Dakota are built right there in Warren Mi and Caravans in Windsor Ont.

The big Mega Hemis 7.2 are built in Mexico. I looking at them last week the content label says its mostly U.S and Canadian parts for the majority.

OVM,
The last time I was at Dodge City on Mound road there was not a Dodge ram on the line nothing but them ugly Dakotas - March of this year. I know that a lot of Dodge trucks come from Mexico, but I didn't know that they had any coming from Canada or the US.

Well it don't matter anyway, a caravan is a foreign built vehicle as is anything that is assembled in Mexico. The only difference is that Canada is nicer to visit. :+

Like Greg said, build in enough per mile to make it worthwhile to deadhead back out.

When I get $1.59 per mile for my cargo van on a 660 mile run, that takes me 120 miles into Canada, I got no problem dropping off and heading back for the boarder.

PS. I do not recommend loads that must cross at Windsor.

"Yeah, Canada is o.k... It reminds me of my attic. I don't go up there very often but when I do I find things that are kinda cool that I forgot about. I wander around a little bit and then I get cold and come back down."

Letzrock, I hope you don't mind my dredging this up without your permission. It is a wonderful analogy and one of my favorite E.O. pieces.
