We all need Bobtail, I feel I know the difference but will someone list or tell me whos gona cover what in these instances.

Your underload, 4 wheeler sideswipes you police determine that he was at fault in a no fault state who pays for what.

Same story but your in a state that he who is at fault pays for the innoncent party, and lets say you are hurt but not bad.

Now your not underload than what happens and you have a seperate insurance company for Bobtail than for Cargo or even if it is the same its treated differently.

Now take the same above accidents but truck driver is at fault, and the 4 wheeler is hurt than how and who.

Thank you for your time I just want to clearify if my limited knowledge on this is correct or not.

Is this just another way to screw us I feel that below fuel not feel but its fact insurance is my 3rd biggest expense, truck payment first, but the older she gets the less expensive the insurance is.

Hard question to answer without seeing your policy.
Insurance company, place of accident, location of insured all play a part. Some states demand certain restrictions of insurance companies from deductibles, no fault, the uninsured, all the way to glass coverage.

You may need a review to see if you are under insured.
Many are when looking at hazmat loads and there is a accident. How much are you really covered for? A hazmat spill could cost millions.
You and your carrier have coverage but what if it is exceeded?

The same issues apply with no fault or say you are hit by a drunk with no insurance. What are you coverages then? Laws will be different from state to state.

Don't forget to review your policy when you are under load, and when you are not.

insurance in trucking is very misleading. as for your questions reguarding coverage. we have done some indepth resaerch recently do to an accident some friends had. the facts as we understand them and what was told us by our ins. carrier are, being under load only matters to the company. the box ins. covers the frgt. minus the amt. of ded. you are required to pay thats basically it. if you are hit by an insured motorist then you the cargo, trk. are all covered. by all accounts the best scenario. if you hit another or just wreck your trk. the other parties or party is covered as well as your trk., just not you or personal property. the comp. and coll. part of your trk. ins. takes care of this. as for no fault, i agree that you must check w/your state. if you are hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist and all you have is your bobtail you are screwed unless they have something you can sue for and the time and money to follow it through. worst possible scenario. the bobtail ins. we all carry does not include any medical payments or coverage for lost wages or any other kind of relief. you need to have work comp or the best option is an occupational accident policy. this will cover you in almost any situation that happens when working with the trk. this is the only way unless you can put a rider on your personal health ins. but a rider is generally needed has the ins co. is usually pretty discriminate about paying for a work accident on a personal policy. also when purchasing an occ. accident policy check the coverage amts. if the price is cheap the coverage probably is to. check it out. get a policy with the most coverage you can afford. hope this helps, if you have more ??? please ask we will try to help.

I've been told there can be controversy with bobtail since the o/o gets bobtail coverage from one company and liability from the carrier under another . Suppose you are dispatched to pick up a load but make a short trip off route for personal business . If you are involved in a wreck who covers it ? I feel it is better to have unladen liability rather than bobtail . There is little difference in cost but if you are unloaded you are covered no matter what the circumstances .

I have all of my insurance through OOIDA's Owner Operator Services.

If you are a member, and you should be if you own your rig, it is worth giving them a call @ 800-715-9369.

The lady I dealt with, Andrea Dinwiddie, got me hooked up with everything I needed for only 138.75 per month. The truck is covered on an actual cash value basis, along with under/uninsured, non-trucking liability, etc., etc.

It wasn't the cheapest quote I got (a couple of the outfits I called never bothered to FAX me a quote!!!), but the quick response time from OOIDA in both getting the quote, FAXing the info to my carrier once I got covered, as well as her general attitude to my questions made going with OOIDA a snap decision for me. even at a few bucks more per month.
