Instead of QC tracking locations.....

I would like to find a system, other than QC, that would allow our customers to see where our trucks and their shipments are.

Most of my o/ops are signing on with laptops in their trucks.

Is there a software program or something that a customer can access over the internet and find the truck, if the truck is using a laptop.

Now of course I would want the ops to agree to this, afterall its's their system, I would also test such a system out on my laptop first and in my truck before I do anything.

But, privacy issues to the side, at least for the bosses truck, does anyone know of anything that is out there I could use utilizing laptops.............not some fancy overpriced system like QC.

Greg,

Why would you ask that here? Most folks are glad to rid themselves of big brother when they become a carrier and you're trying to add it? It sounds like a cool service to have, but really unnecessary unless you have a large fleet. Have the O/Os check in every few hours and update their location.

Maybe you could have a web site where your O/Os could put in position updates with notes and every time the site is updated your customer gets an automatic email update. Either that or let your customer log into the same site and see the updates. When I start leasing on O/Os, I don't want something that tracks them everywhere. When I was leased on I didn't want big brother and I don't want to be what I didn't want as a driver.

The supertruck that EO gave away at last year's Expedite Expo had a GPS device aboard that allowed tracking via the internet. Ask Lawrence for details.

A bit of advice....

If you are going to offer a service to be competitive, don't be cheap.

I can tell you from practical experience that depending on someone with a laptop to provide customer service like this is not a good idea especially if you expect them to provide the equipment. If the unit becomes damaged, if there is a software problem, if there is no connection (like earlier today, major market but no good connection), if you are dealing with a driver (owner) who does not care and so on all matter when it comes to customer service.

Remember when there are problems, you have to decide if you are paying the people to be computer techs or drivers - I don't want my drivers to be computer techs.

There is a reason companies go with Quallcom, it is not that they are the only game in town but their equipment is proven and it is not an issue to get it installed or fixed almost anywhere.

But Jefferson, seems the only ones that object to a tracking devise are the shammers. And greg don't want any of them anyway.

well let one of them go a few days with no contact with a driver when a customer wants to know why the freight hasnt been deliverd.

a real trucker knows his job and a cell phone is fine in most cases but if you own a truck and hire strangers dont you think you should protect your asset?

I have lost a truck and wish I had a device to track it without the driver even knowing its there.
