Old truckrers rule of thumb, (no matter how many disagree with me), When you replace one, replace both of them.

funny you should say that... I did a 2AM run due to fog (plane was unable to land where it normally does)

thick fog.. rolling down the highway.. it suddenly gets darker out and harder to see.. Lost the left headlight.

Stopped at a 24hr in and out gas station. They had 2 of my bulbs in stock but I'll be ****ed if I am paying 24.99 each for two. Figure I'll hit Walmart or an auto parts store when I get close to one. Pop the new bulb in and head out.

Holly cow is the old right one dim! Then I was reminded, as bulbs age, they get dimmer. Kinda like me :/

Wow I would charge the same price .... Oh I have!

It is a good object lesson to remember to carry extra bulbs, belts, oil, even oil filters.

You can only carry so much with you. as far as spare parts. HL's for a GM (well.. most any with sealed beams) are large and fragile. Since loosing one, while an issue, is not a dead on road event I choose not to haul around a spare. Plus replacements are easy to obtain, even if the price tag is high.

Worst case a guy can click on the high beams and adjust down the bulbs.

In fog however, high beams just brighten the glare back at you.

Sorry but it seems that having spare bulbs, a headlight (or In some cases a bulb) does not take up a lot of room but if one has an issue with a headlight breaking in their van, then I would not put my freight on that van.

To each their own. I run a standard size cargo van, and do mainly local. I do not see the need to carry a 8X6X6 box around with a bulb in it. My spare parts are kept under my front seat in a box. Inside are many hard parts, belt tensioner, idler pulley, tools, fluids (my chevy likes it's oil) and things of that nature. I do have a collection of the small bulbs in the glove box.

Freight does not get damaged in my van, but I have had bulbs broken in the box under the seat due to road conditions.

If your afraid to put fragile freight under my seat, that's fine. SO AM I!

The cargo area of my van is strictly for cargo. Since my van only holds 2 pallets with little room for anything else in the back leaving the large sealed beam headlights on the shelf at the parts store seems logical to me. They can be bought most anywhere. Walmart, any auto parts store, or a 24 hour truck stop.

Sometimes you have to pay a premium for them.

We bought one of the clear craft/tackle box style containers that we keep all of our bulbs in. This way they can have individual spots and we always have a visual inventory of what we have. It is easily kept under the seat, or in a shelf. We have headlights, tail lights, license plate bulbs, and any other bulb thinkable in there as well. It is also quite convenient to keep our extra fuses in there as well.

All my years driving, I never had bulbs or headlights break but here is my point, if you have to deal with a problem like a burned out light on the road, then be prepared and bring a few extra with you. Doesn't take up space and it is simple to fix while taking a break.

I would get some oil, power steering fluid, bulbs, transmission fluid, and a belt. We carry all of our tools in an ammo box that fits between the wall and the guides that we have on the outside of our wheel wells. All of our extra parts are also in the ammo box, or fit inside of a box that 4 quarts of oil came in. It doesnt take up much space and can cover your butt in a sticky situation.

Again. the bulbs my van take are huge (in comparison to a 9004/9006 that many sprinters take) My van is 8' 2" to the bulkhead. I transport loose bags, not pallets. They can, and do fill up the entire cargo compartment of my van. Therefore I am forced to keep spare parts/tools in the front with me. I also have to keep such items as tie downs, moving blankets and other materials in the front with me. They take up most of the space between the seats. That means I have the space under the seats to keep additional items. Under one seat I keep two 1 gallon jugs of oil and transmission fluid (now that the transmission has been replaced, I could probably drop the gallon and keep a quart) under the other, I have limited room for tools/parts. A single sealed beam headlight occupies 1/3 of the space in that box. I have had 194's and 3057's in the box, in their package break because of all the metal objects kept in said box.

It is a 5 minute job to replace the bulb. I traveled 2 miles in BFE Minnesota to find a place open to buy a new bulb. I am home almost every 24 hours. I see no need to carry large parts that are easily obtainable on the road and who's failure will not strand me on the side of the road.

For those of you with larger, straight trucks, or TT's I can see the need to keep these things in your truck because even though finding the bulb might be easy, parking your truck there to replace it might not be.

I do carry a handful of the smaller bulbs that my van uses in the glove box. a headlight won't fit there.

Cabledude not trying to offend you but it is a message for those who seem not to get the idea that this isn't like a vacation. I understand you point which is as valid as mine.

Got ya ;)

If you have the room, carry a HL bulb. If you can't, carry the small bulbs.

Fuel additives? leave um on the shelf.

Zane- I have a questions. Don't you carry extra parts for MX with you while you are doing that? Why wouldn't you carry extra parts/basic maintenance items with you for your van when that is the thing that makes you money?

Why do you assume this kid is on vacation?
Maybe he is just youthful, ambitious and driven with the emphasis on youthful.
Steeper learning curve (I would imagine) than a worldly pot bellied professor type giving advice from a van or truck.
This kid blows up the forum all day long and takes pokes from all the senior's whilst driving and trying to be the best he can be cause he see's opportunity ahead..
The best part is he has enough confidence in himself not to care what others say and still gives himself and everyone he touches his best every hour every day.
Me myself, well suffice it to say I am still on perpetual vacation him not so much.

Hey 'tude
I wasn't yanking his chain at all so no need to defend him. He's learning and listening, unlike some others and seems to get the idea to learn by others mistakes.
