Indianapolis Museum of Art

Diane and I spent a pleasant layover day yesterday at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

- Admission is free.

- The facility and exhibits are high quality.

- Parking for straight trucks is available and possibly for semis too but big rig drivers may want to call ahead.

- The grounds include nice walking paths for those who wish to run or walk for exercise.

- There is no dress code. A tiny handful of people were well dressed but many if not most visitors wore blue jeans and tennis shoes.

- The police were on us the instant we parked our truck, wanting to know if we were there to make a delivery. I explained we were there to visit and asked it was OK to park our truck there while we did so. The officer said there was a better place to park and escorted us to the bus parking area.

- Access is easy. The Whitestown TA is just 14 miles up the road at Exit 130 on I-65. From there, go south on I-65 and take the 38th Street exit (Exit 119), go east on 38th and turn left into the museum parking lot. From the truck stops at Exit 4, the distance is about 16 miles. The route is not as direct so choose your own. Enter the museum parking lot from 38th Street.

If you are laying over at an Indianapolis truck stop, take a shower, take an easy drive and enjoy a pleasant day at the Indiana Museum of Art.

Guys, if the arts are not your thing, the naked women on the walls may interest you. Lemon Drop Girl is a beauty to behold. Your appreciation for the arts will surely rise when you lay your eyes on her.

Seriously, the painting has artistic merit. That's why it is in the museum. Study Lemon Drop Girl and let her usher you into the arts.

Layover Lounge Put it in park. You're going to be here awhile. Idling is permitted. The Layover Lounge is where you can share the best places and activities to do while you're on a layover. Got a favorite place? Post it for all to see. Where are you laid over today?

I posted it here because I can and because the Layover Lounge description states clearly that this forum is for posts like these. Last time I tried to post directly to the Day Tripper forum, it did not go up but to a moderator instead. Here I can post direct.

When some of my other day trip posts were moved from this forum to the day tripper forum, I noticed that the entire thread was not moved but links were placed in the day tripper part that brought people back to the original posts here. Better I thought to simply post here.

Also, I received a private message not long ago from someone who wanted to add good info to my Biltmore House post but could not because the thread in the day tripper forum was locked. My posts here don't get locked and people can reply even months after the original post went up.

While it is redundant to this forum, I can see an advantage in the Day Tripper forum in that it presents a clear and easy list of things to do here and there for expediters who are looking for ways to spend layover time on the road. This Layover Lounge forum is more cluttered and good things to do can be missed or more difficult to find.

No suggestions or recommendations here. Just a lengthy explanation as to why I posted here instead of there.

Well, I just thought of a suggestion. Maybe use the Day Tripper Forum by putting up original posts only and links back to the full threads in the Layover Lounge. That gives posters and readers the ability to continually interact while also providing a quick and clean list.

The museum is a nice place to spend some time. They also have a festival every year called the Penrod Arts fair held on the grounds of the museum. Back in my sound tech days I had the pleasure of running sound for a couple of the live stages there and my daughter has also danced during the festival on several occasions. It might be a little to crowded at that time to get a truck bigger than a van in though. To make a note some specialty exhibits do have a charge, for Christmas I got my daughter tickets to the Andy Warhol exhibit. It is gone now but she had great things to say about it and even asked for a yearly student pass for her birthday after going.

When my wife and I were in Paris, we went to the Louvre. I very much enjoyed the Rubens! :D
