How many in here have retired from trucking only to return to trucking ?

My Father was lucky enough to play golf up to 6 days a week for a few years as a fleet owner.

When he retired he soon tired of golf. He was excited to deliver flowers for a number of years after retiring.

I didn't retire but tried to move on and ended right back in the driver's seat. I'm younger than most here (34 in March) but I just can't imagine retiring and not using retirement to make money traveling in a HCV or Sprinter.

I'm 74 and I have retired 4 times. I now limit my work year to April thru Oct. And, I like to work, like, 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Anyone want to sign me on? I'm very expensive because my nurse must travel with me. As long as I know I'm safe (never had a accident; one ticket in 40 years) and don't spill my soup on my chin I'll keep my hat in the ring. Retirement don't work for some people.

I wish I could retire. There are more than 11,000 lakes in Michigan and I have only fished about 30 of them. I have a LOT of work to do! :p

The friend who introduced us to trucking by taking us for our first-ever ride in a truck had retired at age 65+ but returned to the road because he could not stand it. The truck he showed us was the truck he bought to get back out.

Our experience is different, probably because we are not leaving the road to retire (don't know if we will ever do that) but to start a new business. The reason our truck is not yet sold is because we literally forget we own it. Our attention is now focused elsewhere and the days are full. The truck sits parked out of sight and out of mind. We check on it now and then, but other than that, we are mindful of and immersed in the new adventure.

Next week is blocked off to move the truck to Indiana where it will be put on the lot to be sold. It is a magnificent machine that has served us well, but in our new business the truck has become a distraction and we'll be glad to see it sold.

Do we miss the road? Sometimes, but not really. Granted, it has only been a few weeks since we parked the truck, but we're too busy now to even think about a previous career.

The other day, we saw part of a movie on TV that was set on the streets of Philadelphia. The sights, smells and sounds that we experienced there instantly came back to mind. It was fun to watch the movie scenes with personal experience of Philadelphia that we never would have had but for expediting. Memory triggers like that happen often and leave us pleased and grateful that we got to spend the time on the road as truckers like we did.

We are meeting many people these days who have traveled very little. We are a bit surprised by the envy the express regarding our travels. As truckers, we never took the traveling for granted, but doing the traveling, it came easily. For many non-truckers, the ability to lay down the miles like we did and travel to all corners of the country is a distant dream that will never come true.

Expediting is a rich, rich blessing; available only to the people who are courageous enough to embrace life on the road. Whether you miss the road enough to return to it after you leave depends on what awaits when you park your truck.

I'm 73 and down to one pooch and she's in the home stretch. If I survive her I'll probably go back. I enjoyed it.

I have vivid memories of "April in Erie". Much prefer looking at that white stuff from my living room. Oh by the way, I worked every day for 62 years, since age 16. I think I have earned a rest.

I'm 80 years old and have retired 5 times (Army, Police Dept. 3 times from Expediting) and I would go back again if possible.

Are you so safe at your age because you have a nurse that yells " Jim, Look up !" ?
Or is that the secret to keeping the soup off your chin ?

Good points there. It sounded more like midlife crisis or delayed midlife crisis(yeah you still can go thru this at age 83, lol). I went thru a few of them, lol. It's fun to get out of a routine every 10 years or so :)

When I joined this site I belonged to a tee time golf date bidding site and the lookup is what described my golf swing. I'm so old now that's hard to look up very fast so I no longer have this problem.
The nurse moniters my EKG and ties my bib on so I don't spill soup on my chest. I'm training her to also watch the oil pressure and temp guages. If I ever have to unload the truck by hand, I'm hoping she'll chip in.
The safety part just happens. I guess I learned good fundamentals as a kid when I drove the horse and buggy to school.

If you can climb out of your van, sprinter, straight truck without falling out, your good to go. Now walk in the truck-stop and have a coffee..............
