Ice Road Trucking in Harlan, Ky.... how coal gets to market

Brings back memories - used to travel that area extensively in the mid 1970s. The people and the geography leave a lasting impression. Used to have some really good B&W photos of the mining areas in the Hazard and Harlan areas, plus some from around Logan and Williamson, WV. In a political season one wonders why some of our erstwhile politicians don't do more to make it possible to harvest the coal and natural gas in these areas. That's the only hope to alleviate the poverty that's always plagued this pocket of Appalachia.

My Dad was born in Hazard, and spent his first years in the Blue Diamond camp. Grandpa and his brothers were miners. Dad was driving a coal truck when he was 13! Different world.

Here's how coal trucks operate in Aristotleland. Ten minutes downhill descent and this truck is only half way down the mountain. Video starts near Grassy Creek, Virginia crossing into Pike County, Ky to Biggs which is part of the Feds Creek mining village where I grew up.

The roads appear greatly improved from my younger days.

Coal keeps the lights on.
