I am getting my front brakes and rotors replaced today and I might just go ahead and replace the wheel bearings as well. They are not making any noise and my tires are not wearing unevenely, I am just not sure if I should mess with them or not. The van has 268 thousand miles on it and I bought it with 120k on it so i'm not sure if and when they've ever been replaced. Also, have any of you guys ever used federal mogul wheel bearings with any luck. I hear timken an SKF are the best, but I can't find any of those brands locally. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check NAPA for SKF that is where I got my back-up hub at. I replaced mine at 250k with AC Delco's. I will probably replace them at 480K just for maintenance sake. It is lot cheaper to have it done on home time then to have one burn up on the road while under a load. Use Skype I am board:D

Blizzard, are those individual inner and outer bearings or the sealed bearings in the hub where the whole hub has to be replaced?

If its the complete hub units, replace them..its not hard to do at all, I changed mine in the parking lot of a Auto Zone ...

If it is the individual bearing, look them over real good, make sure there is not excessive wear , taper or wear on the races and cages...it they look good, repack them and torque them to the right spec...You will be ready to go...Now that said, they are cheap enough to replace and any "good name" will be ok...Fed Mog is good stuff...as is Timkin.....

2003 and newer used seal hubs. So replacing the Hubs and all are the only way to go. I think Moot wrote about this a while ago.

Thanks for the responses. There is a big debate on the internet about SKF, Federal Mogul, and Timkens. Everyone swears by their own preference but the general concensus seems to be that Timkens are the gold standard. Yes Chef they are the sealed unit, the entire assembly needs to be replaced. Another stroke of GM genius. They should have at least provided the hub assembly's with a simple grease fitting! I may look around for some SKF's, but time is limited as this work needs to be completed today, and the van has got to be put back on the road tomorrow. The bank balance is running a little low now lol.

I'll skype ya after I get the van dropped off in the shop yo!
