I was wondering if anyone could tell me what an average start up cost is (permits, what permits I may need,Insurance Costs, how much insurance to get,and if there is a broker that deals with cargo vans, etc.) I would be operating out of the Grand Rapids, Michigan area with two cargo vans. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS

Depending on the way you plan to set up your company will determine the cost. Your own authority alone is going to cost you $300 or more. If you can do it on your own, you will save some money. The insurance is also a big factor depending on how you plan to set up your company. $1million - $100thousand is common for the average Expediting company, (and that isn’t all that cheap, about $5K to $8K a year per van) but then that depends on the terms of the shipper, he may want $200 thou.

I don’t know of any brokers that book cargo van loads, but then I’m not looking for them. If you plan to start a delivery service, you may want to first find out what it is your getting into. You may want to write a business plan and get some people to read it, and get their feed back. You may want to lease on with a company for a while and learn what you need.
