I know firearms are taboo but what about...

No K-bar, particularly when attached to a rifle. Got a Louisville Slugger? Best to also have a ball and glove otherwise it might be considered a weapon. A sawed-off Louisville Slugger would be a good tire thumper, but not in a van.

I keep a spray can of brake cleaner,by my side.
Will cause instant blindness to the SCUM.

Start thinking about tools instead, such as a crowbar and a large MAGlight. Keep in mind these are only as good as your proximity to them.

Your protection really starts with keeping alert and scanning about. Be very aware of your surroundings and those in your vicinity and approaching.

Consider taking courses in self-defence.

When I was doing some sewing in my van, I put the safety pins in the headliner, directly overhead, as I pulled them out of the fabric. It only occurred to me later, that the 2 inch pins could serve as a weapon, in a pinch. More than one scumbag would definitely call for the hornet spray or brake cleaner, though. I like the hornet spray especially, cause it has a huge nozzle, which guarantees I won't point it in the wrong direction! :+

Wow, thread resurrection from the dead! :)

I like the hornet spray idea also, big nozzle equals no miss, but I will probably back it up with a baseball bat. I'm more of a "hands on" kind of guy when it comes to scrapping with trouble-makers, so I think I'd find the hollow thunk of the wood-skull connection most satisfying!
