How Would This Work?

If you're sent to pick up at a certain location, certain time;
You arrive early, let shipper know you're there, they're waiting on a part to arrive from someone else, so they can get the thing you're picking up, ready to go;
They're late; other part has not yet arrived;
It's Friday night; The shipper is now closing, for the weekend; Shipper can't get in contact with this missing part;
Shipper re-opens on Monday morning;
You were supposed to have picked up this item, driven it say 60 miles by Saturday morning, to get another piece added to shipment, then drive another say 200 miles to final destination Saturday afternoon.
So.. all is cancelled becuz everyone now closed for the weekend; you can't do the stop-off becuz you don't have the initial piece to get added on to.
How would your carriers settle this with you? You sat and waited for say 4 hours, until shipper closed, lost your load opportunies due to some other delivery not arriving. You drove to the pickup point, sat and waited for say 4 hours and then left empty.
If your carrier would pay you, what would they pay? Time? The whole trip as if it happened?
If your carrier pays you, who gets billed in the end? The shipper? And they in turn would bill the delivery company who failed to arrive with the pertinent part which the rest of the trips hinged upon?

With our carrier (FedEx Custom Critical) it would probably have been set up as a two stop run and the run would cancel when the first part was not received. Arriving early and waiting as you did would have no impact on pay. No detention time would be paid as you were not supposed to be there until the pickup time.

When it became clear that the shipment would not go, the run would "dry run" as we call it at FedEx Custom Critical. Dry run pay would be awarded. The amount would be a set rate (I don't know the exact figure) plus more, depending on how far you drove to get to the pickup. Whatever the amount, it would not be much, and it would be significantly less than the run would have paid had the run been completed.

"Less than 75" status would also be awarded, which means you move higher in the dispatch system for receiving load offers; essentially, first on the board in the area you are in on loads you are eligible to haul.

Another way to put it is the load would cancel and you are screwed. It happens sometimes in this business.

have had this happen,detention time starts in a tractor 5 hours after pick up arrival appointment,as have to give extra hour for second pick up.so lets say arrival was suppose to be at 2000 hours,at midnight plant closes,now after the first hour you are to get in contact with the carrier,they inturn call shipper,find out the problem,but sometime before closing,load would cancel,and all pick ups would change to monday morning,or, this could happen,but dont think so, get d time all week end,in fedexcc,thats 10 out of every 24.what happen to me was,got dry run,plus dead head to pick up,motel for week end and picked up load on monday

Just was wondering how other carriers would have handled it; I forgot this part - husb was in city of pickup, just having delivered something; they asked him to hang around for 5 hours to wait for a pickup in same city, diff location; so he arrived at pickup early, (earlier than the 5 hours til it was to be ready to go, which is of no consequence), it wasn't ready, he informed dispatch, then waited 2 more hours until shipper closed, without having picked up load, becuz of their other arrival not arriving.
He was to take that load which he never got, to another city in the a.m., to get a piece added, then directly on to another city for final delivery.
When he came home after 11pm when they closed, becuz nothing he could do until Monday morning anyway; he told disptach of course. Then phone rings 3am, what's going on with that load; The changing guard at dispatch, one hand not telling other hand what's up;
Just wondered what you people would've asked for, or received as a matter of you-already-know-what-your-company-would-do?

!st you need an actual pick up time,nothing happens without that,hang around for 5 0r 6 hours isnt a pick up time.then as I stated before,since no load,either customer gets a dry run charge,or they expect you to wait til monday for pick up,and if no actual pick up time,your on your own,no charges,but you would get a 75 status

It's unfortunate that he waited around for several hours, but he's not likely to be compensated for that. If he delivered his first load at 1300 and the one they asked him to wait around on wasn't supposed to pick up until 1800, then his detention wouldn't start until 2000 (2 hrs at Panther). So if he sat there until 2200 when they closed, he'd be paid 2 hours detention, between 2000 and 2200. Plus the dry run pay. It happens sometimes. But, it kind of balances out the times you get pre dispatched on a load and don't have to wait around at all.
