Before you do anything you need to read back at least 1 year in the general, newbies and recruiter forums. You'll not only find scores of discussions of the two companies you asked about but also tons of other important information you should digest before finalizing anything. Those are both excellent companies. Those are both terrible companies. Those are both legitimate answers based on who is giving the answer. I've been with both and they are both great companies. Both are on my short list of recommended companies. For some folks, they don't fit well. There's no way for us to know what will fit with you. That's part of the reason you need to read back at least 1 year. You'll digest enough comments from enough people to get an idea of where they are strong and weak and whether those areas fit your temperament.

have you read the phil madsen series on finding a carrier, finding an owner, questions to ask? you sound like you are hot to go now. DON'T. read this stuff until you know it. then use it.

more importantly have you called these carriers and what did you take away from those discussions?

I've never ran for Express 1 but I did run for Panther for a while. You are comparing chocolate ice cream to orange sherbert. Some like both. Some like one and not the other, and some like neither. The crazy thing about it is most can't give tell you why they gave you the answer they did.

Every carrier has its top producers, long-term contractors and happy people. So too with flashes in the pan, long-term complainers that don't do well but don't leave either, and wash outs.

At least important as the question, "How contractor-friendly is the carrier?" is the question, "How carrier-friendly are you?"

Dispatch systems, office cultures, customer bases and professional standards vary from one carrier to the next. Look at carriers not with an eye toward how good they will be to you, but with an eye toward how good you can be to them.

Find the dispatch system, culture, customer base and professional standards that you can be comfortable with, if not outright delighted, and then give that carrier your very best. Learn the system, adapt yourself to it and work it for all it is worth.

Exactly, as so referenced by Mr. Madsen, there exists a plethora of factors that will direct your path.

I have friends that are leased to both and others who are contract carriers for both.

Panther II and Express 1 are both fine carriers.

Both carriers conduct their business in a professional and honest manner.

For me, I selected a carrier that had a base of operations close to my home. As carrier pushes outward from their base of operations, the bulk of their freight tends to lie within a particular radius from the base.

That radius tends to get me by the house more often. It wasn't the only reason, but it was a major consideration for me.

A medium-sized carrier is a good fit for me.

Big enough to have a regular customer base, but no so huge that I "Feel Like A Number".
