Well, as crazy as it sounds, $60 billion ain't squat on a large scale. Really, even if our gummint was pared down to size, constitutionally, it wouldn't be that much. And while keeping private industry in business (to the degree any large military supplier can be considered private) and its employees employed is generally a good thing, the MIC isn't a branch that should be saved, nor are "LEOs." Let's have all the peace officers we need, and zero "LEOs."

50,000 jobs?

Where?

Let's see - if you read this Why Are We Selling Saudi Arabia $60 billion in Arms? it seems to clarify some but raise other issues we have.

I mean this little sentence seems to be triggering another question - But one thing's for sure: A decade ago, the idea of giving the country that birthed the 9/11 hijackers 84 new Boeing F-15 fighter jets would get laughed out of Congress.

One thing I can think of if this is to shore up our "crusade" against Iran, what if Saudi Arabia turns out to be another Libya or Syria in the near term? Does the threat to Israel seem to an important issue at that point or are we going to continue fooling ourselves that the Suads are our freinds and we need to help them suppress their internal democracy movements?

Maybe we are going to see jobs but at what cost in our future and how would we justify some of the issues that it will end up causing.

Yup - good for them (the government ... and those that bought them ... with our money)

Bad for the American people, the people in the region, including possibly the citizens of Saudi Arabia themselves, and the rest of the world.

.... just more cheerleading for mindless militarism ....

Greag, this is an OIL war.
the Saudi's rank # 3 on the US supply chain .
last month the administration said they are looking for other markets to supply us & the EU with oil, so they can enforce sanctions over Iran .

It's a pay off, and a trade off.
this is an election year, and you can expect more of that, especially with this administration in office.

AND?

I don't see it as an oil war, Saudi Arabia has issues with Iran and we are getting more involved with the BS with their relationship. The thing that many don't seem to get is they duped us into selling them equipment and arms because of a religious war, not because of oil and we, the people, are too stupid to get what's really going on there.

last month the administration said they are looking for other markets to supply us & the EU with oil, so they can enforce sanctions over Iran .

So we escalate the issue by doing what?

AND who cares about the EU's oil source, they don't buy from Iran. The dumbest thing that we did was run to their aid over libya, and take part in "spreading democracy" which our allies, Saudi Arabia, Kawait and UEA are not democratic governments so what are we really doing - we are helping the Sauds fight a religious war

It's a pay off, and a trade off.

Where?

There isn't any.

We went into Kuwait and got nothing but promises. No Oil just for us, no paying us back or anything.

We went into Iraq and should have taken over the oil fields for ourselves, the money we dumped into them we'll never see.

See there won't be a trade off because these countries are part of OPEC which means prices and production are tightly controlled and it isn't just an individual country that can step out of the group and make deals with others, they all have to work together and they do no matter what.

If we are going to see more of this, then maybe we need to have more of what's going on with Iran be discussed by the republican candidates, not the party talking points or the conventional wisdom because both are far from the truth.
