How stupid can parents be

You know I am kinda’ strict with my nephews and nieces when they ride with me, which thank God is rare – too much noise. Well they have to be strapped into their seat, feet on the floor and arms in the car – no exceptions.

Well tonight I went up to get gas in my wife’s van and saw a really sad accident.

I was slowly passed by a mother and her two daughters in a Ford Ranger, she was on the phone (of course not paying attention) and the daughter in the far side of the seat had her feet up on the dash, and the daughter in the middle had her feet folded under her, which looked like she had no seat belt on.

Well as we approached a traffic light, there was a car turning left in her lane and the light turning yellow. She didn’t realize that there was a car in front of her until she was on top of the car turning left (less than two full car lengths)and swerved into the opposite traffic lane at the same time as someone was running the yellow light – boom! She could have easily hit me but no one can figure out why she went left – maybe it was because she had the phone in her right hand? No one knows.

I caught the action of what happen as I turned toward the screeching tires because I was next to it. The girl in the far side seat folded up when the air bag went off, instantly blood everywhere. The girl in the middle hit the windshield hard, smashing it and it looks like she ended up wedged between the seat and the dash. The mother had the airbag deploy and her hand with the phone hit the windshield. What a mess!

Fortunately there was a cop sitting in the turn lane of the cross road and witnessed the accident, the fire department is only a block away and EMS was on the scene quickly.

The fireman I talked to said that the girl in the middle is really messed up, closed head injuries and can’t move, maybe a broken back. The mother had the phone shatter in her hand and plastic in her eye from her glasses being smashed by the air bag. But the saddest thing was the girl in the passenger seat; she will lose one maybe both legs at best. The fireman said that they think her pelvis, hips and upper legs are crush by the airbag deployment.

So I got to ask, what is wrong with parents letting their kids stick their feet on the dash?

It isn't just parents letting kids do that. I get passed by at least a dozen vehicles a day with the passenger riding with bare feet up on the dash.

I've seen drivers with their left foot on the dash and reclined in the seat. It's a car, not the lazy boy in front of the tube.
